DES MOINES – Green thumbs from across the state collected ribbons in the floriculture limited classes competition judged at the Iowa State Fair. Patricia Parrish of Diagonal placed sixth in dish garden. Betty Schultz of Greenfield place fifth in dish garden, fifth in patio garden, second in pick of the day, second in bucket list, second in first apartment, third in hip hip hurray, third in bungee jumping, second in it’s show time, fourth in butter cow, third in country crooners, first in bingo, second in around the world, first in heaven on earth, second in land of plenty, third in let me call you sweetheart, second in star light, star bright, third in fishoholic, third in button, Bbtton, who’s got the button, third in tee time (golf), third in princess of doors and fifth in queen of pedestals.

At the Wether Sire/Dam Sheep show judged Aug. 19 at the state fair, Brian Mericle of Bedford won the champion ewe banner. In black face ram lamb, Brian Mericle of Bedford won sixth. In black face ewe lamb, Huntington Club Lambs of Afton placed eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th(2) and 13th; Brian Mericle of Bedford placed fouth and Bierle Club Lambs of Creston placed ninth and 13th. In white face/speckled face yearling ram, Wasteney Club Lambs of Shannon City placed first. In white face/speckled face ram lamb, Wasteney Club Lambs of Shannon City placed sixth and Bierle Club Lambs of Creston placed 10th. In white face ewe lamb, Wasteney Club Lambs of Shannon City placed second and sixth.

Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley earned third place overall and $200 and also won the sweepstakes award in the Midwest Living and Gold Medal Flour Cookies competition judged Aug. 19. Kiburz-Harrison also placed third in molded or pressed - coconut, second in molded or pressed - crackles/crinkles (any flavor), third molded or pressed - peanut butter, third in molded or pressed - thumbprint (any filling permitted), first in drop cookies - dried fruit (other than oatmeal raisin), second in drop cookies - frosted drop (any flavor), second in drop cookies - M&M, third in drop cookies - oatmeal chocolate chip (with or without nuts), first in drop cookies - oatmeal (other than named), first in drop cookies - peanut butter base, third in drop cookies - potato chip, third in drop cookies - ranger, first in drop cookies - white chocolate, third in drop cookies - other than named, first in drop cookies - overall subdivision winners, third in refrigerated and rolled - sandwich cookies, first in health cookies - made with a sugar substitute, first in health cookies - whole grain, second and third in health cookies - overall subdivision winner, first in ethnic cookies - Chinese almond and first in ethnic cookies - Scandinavian. Hester Derscheid of Ellston place third in both refrigerated and rolled - rolled sugar (unfrosted) and cake mix cookies - drop or shaped (frosted or unfrosted). Cynthia Wolf of Creston placed third in bar cookies - three-layer bars other than named and second in bar cookies - one-layer other than named.
