PEO Chapter AZ

The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held Oct. 4 at Salem Lutheran Church.

15 members were present.

David Hargrove gave a program about the history of the Creston Library.

Refreshments were served by hostess Mary Ann Walsh and co-hostess Mary Lou Judd.

A social meeting will be held 12:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Wallace Center.  Meet at Salem Lutheran at noon to carpool. RSVP to Jody Emerson. The next regular meeting will be held Nov 1 at the home of Kay Kinsella with Terri Hopkins serving as co-hostess.

October birthday luncheon will be noon Oct. 27 at Adams Street Espresso.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Oct. 12.

Canasta winners were Joan Chubick, first; Marilyn Larimore, second; and Sharon Gile, third.

Cheri Lilly won the door prize.

Next cards and chatter will be a salad luncheon 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Bancroft History Assembly

Bancroft History Assembly met Oct. 3 at the Community Room at Crest Plaza with five members and three life-members present. President JoAnn Nurnberg called the meeting to order. The pledge to the flag was recited. The theme for the day was “Talk happiness – the world is sad enough without your woe.”

Roll call was answered by telling what they like best about colorful leaves and what is their favorite.

Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was given and filed for audit.

There were no committee reports. Discussion was held about the district meeting which will be held Oct.14 at Salem Lutheran Church in Creston. Federation news encouraged the group to review the Club Women Magazine. Nurnberg will make this available to the group.

With no further business the Club Collect was recited and the meeting adjourned.

Sandy Oswald gave a very interesting report about "Iowa as a territory and its inhabitants," starting the theme for the year of early Iowa history.

Dessert was served by hostess Marisue Lewis. Next meeting will be Nov. 7 with Joan Chubick as hostess.

Chapter LG P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met Oct. 4 at the home of Sandra Harris with Annette Rice assisting as co-hostess. Thirteen members responded to roll call. Judy Weese noted that an invitation was sent to Chapter AZ inviting them to the annual auction Nov. 15 at Salem Lutheran Church. With new member Ellen Rinner, the group now has 36 active members and 33 inactive members.

P.E.O. discussed using black slacks and white tops for initiation instead of robes and voted to order a new star symbol for use in the ceremony. They also voted to send $20.17 to the state organization to assist in making the fund for the Star Scholarship an endowed, self-perpetuating fund.

The program was given by Terry Ammon on her recent visit to Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri.

Plans were made to go to Afton for the next birthday luncheon Oct. 11, and then share dessert with Carol Harrison, who now resides in Afton, following our lunch. The next regular will be 9:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at the home of Jennifer Hoyt with Julie Christensen serving as co-hostess.

TOPS #IA 1338

TOPS #IA 1338 met Oct. 3 at Creston First United Methodist Church with Shellie Adams calling the meeting to order. Eleven members answered roll call. Monica Belew was the best loser and Beverly Lyon was runner-up. Minutes were read by Anna Thompson and treasurer’s report given by Alice Brown. The contest “Inches Away” ended with the Lyon team winning.

The program was given by Carol Sheldahl about the county with the highest obesity rate in every state. The U.S. is the wealthiest country in the world and one of the most obese – 18 out of 230. Union County rated 26 in the U.S. and highest in Iowa with the main reason being not enough exercise. Next week the program will be a round-table discussion. The “Red Can” challenge was to substitute an ingredient in a dish with lower calories.

On Sept. 26, Adams was best loser and Barb P. took second. Belew received the fines from Sept. 19. Squares went to Neoma Davis. The Red Can challenge was to have no red meat for two meals this week. Loss for the week was 11.5 pounds.

Bev Roberts gave the secretary’s report and Brown reported the treasury balance, both were approved. For the program, Barb P. shared the “six tips for pushing through a weight-loss plateau.” Dietitians tell us once someone has lost usually around 10 percent of body weight, weight loss slows down. The following tips were given to get past a plateau: mind the energy gap, reframe goals, reassess your diet, plan ahead, move more and stay positive.

Creston United Methodist Women

After summer break, Creston United Methodist Women (UMW) met 9 a.m. Aug. 25 in Fellowship Hall. Susan Weight presided with seven officers present and special events chairman, Jerrie Henderson, also attended. The UMW purpose was read in unison and joys and concerns were shared. Beth Perry led the devotions.

Minutes and treasurer’s report of the June meeting were approved. Correspondence was shared and the committee reports given.

Vice President Ann Driskell is working on the 2017 yearbook. The group discussed an evening meeting for the December unit meeting.

In old business, they discussed the upcoming fall fundraiser dinner. The date was changed from the third Sunday to Oct. 30. The menu will be chicken and noodles, sloppy joes, vegetables, salads and desserts with a work day the Saturday before.

In new business, it was noted the kitchen needed some high-sided skillets. Judy Kading and Henderson volunteered to donate a skillet each. The officers will prepare brunch Sept. 1 for the unit meeting. Henderson will give the program on “Human Trafficking.” A donation of $300 was received and it was decided to purchase Bibles for the prison ministries “Women at the Well” program.

On Sept. 1, the officers prepared brunch for the unit meeting. Weight called the meeting to order and Perry gave the blessing. After brunch, Perry led the devotions and Weight introduced Reta Freihage, South Central District Sshepherdess, who urged attendance at the district meeting Sept. 17 in Knoxville. She also encouraged attending mission in October.

Rosalie Denton read the minutes of the May 2016 unit meeting. Roll call was answered by six members of Morning Circle, 10 members of Evening Circle, Pastor Jodi Rushing and two guests, Deb Short and Freihage. Denton also presented the treasurer’s report.

The business at this meeting was the same as the executive meeting.

Henderson then presented the program on “Human Trafficking.” She stated that slavery and human bondage has been going on forever. Poverty is a major cause of this. They viewed a video from the Iowa Bar Association entitled “Any Kid Anywhere: Sex Trafficking Survivors Stories.”

Morning Circle met Sept. 16 in Fellowship Hall with Alma Hoepker as hostess. Kading presided with eight members present. Perry led the devotions and Kading had the program entitled “Joyful Hunger Pangs.”

Evening Circle met Sept. 16 in Fellowship Hall. Linda Topliff presided with eight members present. Bobi Wooden gave the response moment. The group collected for the school nurse fund and other programs. Topliff gave the program entitled “Joyful Hunger Pangs.”

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Windrow meeting room with 17 members present. President-elect Korina Loudon presided, Jane Lowe gave the prayer and Ken Norton was the finemaster.

The program was given by Norton discussing his recent travels and displaying his photography from the trip. He also discussed online security with all information being protected and changing passwords often. There was also information about device safety when traveling.

The annual fresh, decorated evergreen wreaths and sprays sale for the holiday season has started. There will be two sizes of decorated wreaths and one balsam spray for sale this year. The club will be doing its annual children’s winter coat distribution from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at First United Methodist Church in Creston.
