Vera Hufnagel Lenox

Vera Hufnagel, 93, of Lenox died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at Lenox Care Center.

Memorial celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Lenox Christian Church. Visitation with family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ritchie Funeral Home, 124 S. Main St., in Lenox. Private interment of ashes will be held in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials may be directed to Lenox Christian Church. Vera Louise (King) Hufnagel, daughter of Floyd King and Kate (Hoskinson) King, was born July 10, 1923, in Oskaloosa, Kansas. She attended and graduated from Oskaloosa, Kansas, schools.

On July 20, 1942, Vera married Ernest Lee Hufnagel in Reno, Nevada.

Vera was the last surviving telephone switchboard operator in Lenox before the arrival of dial telephones, she worked in various dress shops in Lenox and drove a bus of special needs children to Creston during the school year. When Ernie purchased the Allis Chalmers dealership in the early 1960s, she became a parts saleswoman.

Vera was active in Lenox Christian Church.

Vera is survived by her sons, Duane Hufnagel (fiancée Jan Dowman) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Mike (Lana) Hufnagel of Manhattan, Kansas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Kate King; brothers, Duane (Dorothy) King and Bud (Gerri) King; sister Elizabeth (John) Williams; husband Ernie in January 2010 and son Mark in February 2003.
