OSCEOLA — Diagonal’s Maddie Lohmann put herself to the test at Tuesday’s Clarke Cross Country Invitational.

Running competitively on consecutive days tested how much she had to give physically and emotionally.

She had plenty left in her tank, leading to a third-place finish.

Albia’s Jordan Winkle won going away. Southeast Warren’s Elsie Emmick was second.

Lohmann wanted more, but her body would not allow it on a hilly course at the Osceola Country Club.

She entered Tuesday coming off a third-place finish at the Orient-Macksburg Cross Country Invitational Monday.

“I had a hard time getting past the hills,” Lohmann said. “I know I could’ve finished harder, but I was hurting from (Monday’s) meet.”

She noted her calves were feeling sore at the end of the race.

“That’s slowing me down,” she said.

Her goal going forward is a top two finish.

“I’ve only gotten second once. I’d like to get second or first,” she said. “But I’m happy with third.”

She has a few days of rest before her next meet.

“I’m hurting,” she said. “This next week of rest will be pretty nice.”

Southwest Valley was led by Elizabeth Fuller’s 14th-place finish.

The Timberwolves were without regular top runner Masilyn Hummel, who was out with an illness.

“Liz ran well,” said Southwest Valley coach Josh Sussman.

Mount Ayr was paced by a 22nd-place finish from Rachel Gregg.

“Rachel Gregg ran well,” said Mount Ayr coach Deb Larsen.

On the boys side, three Mount Ayr boys made its way into the top 11. Isaac Timmerman placed sixth, followed by Chase Smith in ninth and Will Hunt in 11th.

“They ran really well,” Larsen said. “Our top three boys are running really good. It was a good day for them.”

Southwest Valley was paced by Connor Haggerty’s 14th-place finish.

The conditions, with mild temperatures, clear skies and no wind, lent themselves to good times.

“It feels a lot better with these temperatures dropping,” Sussman said. “I start expecting people to run faster.”
