Prank or worse?

When I retired as managing editor of this newspaper, I never thought I would be writing a letter to the editor. An event that happened last week has prompted me to do just that.

There have been many stories about missing dogs. Here is another one. What makes this story different is this dog did not run away. This dog is a 25-year old, 250-pound English bulldog. It happens to be a concrete statue that has faithfully guarded our yard and been a symbol of the real English bulldogs who were our companions and are no longer with us. Unfortunately, our statue is no longer with us. It went missing this past Thursday night from its own yard.

It has been suggested this was a homecoming prank pulled by local teens. I hope this is not the case. I have always been an advocate of local teens. When a now-retired teacher complained about tepeeing and other nondestructive behavior surrounding homecoming events, I always felt this teacher was overreacting. But, this is different. This is all out theft.

Those responsible have no idea the significance of this part of our lives and probably don’t care. Chances are, we will never see this old friend of ours again, but if by chance somebody would see the old boy, please send him home. It would be appreciated and maybe even restore our faith in people.
