Griswold’s big plays sink Nodaway Valley

GREENFIELD – Griswold’s big plays spoiled Nodaway Valley’s homecoming Friday, as the Tigers picked up a 44-28 win over the Wolverines.

Spencer Lamb and Jared Corder connected for their fourth touchdown pass of the game, tying the game at 28-28 with 8:25 to go on a 57-yard connection.

But Griswold answered back with two timely touchdowns.

On third-and-10, Shawn Swain found Chance Mace for a 70-yard touchdown strike to put Griswold up 36-28 with 7:03 left in the game. Then, with 2:35 remaining and Griswold facing a fourth-and-6, Swain hit Mace for a 45-yard touchdown for the final 44-28 margin.

They were the only two completions of the game for Griswold, which had only one completion for the entire season coming into the game.

“They’ve completed one pass all year,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said. “We saw them under-throw, overthrow and everything and he threw two perfect balls.”

Lamb and Corder kept the Wolverines in the game with their four touchdown connections coming on passes of 50, 28, 24 and 57 yards.

Lamb finished 12-of-28 passing for 271 yards, with Corder grabbing nine of those completions for 245 yards.

“We kind of knew that going in they would not have an answer for Jared,” Shantz said. “He made some big plays.”

But Griswold’s powerful ground game provided big plays of its own. Jadon Jahnke finished with 254 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries as the Tigers rolled up 441 rushing yards as a team, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

While the two completions provided the final margin for Griswold, Shantz said it was the big plays in the running game that sunk Nodaway Valley.

“We knew we had to stop the big play. That’s what killed us all night long,” Shantz said. “Like I told them, that was the last two scores. But I tell you what, those two power plays were huge where they ran both of those.”

UP NEXT — Nodaway Valley, (1-4, 1-2) hosts Southwest Valley at 7 p.m. Friday. Southwest Valley (3-2, 2-1) now has a winning record in district play with a 55-12 win over Martensdale-St. Marys on Friday.
