Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Sept. 22 with Pat Fils as hostess at the home of Martha McAuley. All members were present and answered roll call by telling what fall tasks they have completed.

Cheryl McClure presided. Communications from International included an offer of group insurance and the membership list to be confirmed.

The president reviewed a section on meetings from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi.

Fils was in charge of the program. She first shared knowledge of “What our cats teach us.” Next, in keeping with this election year, she conducted a quiz on “Knowledge of U.S. Presidents” and another quiz on American history. Members took part in discussing the answers. Prize winners were Loretta Kelly and McClure.

Members repeated the closing ritual and gathered around the refreshment table for a social time.

Bancroft History Assembly

Bancroft History Assembly met Sept. 19 at Greater Regional Medical Center D.V. Richardson room with six members and three life members present. JoAnn Nurnberg, president, called the meeting to order. The theme for the day was “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Roll call was answered by telling your first impression if you were the first white person to arrive in Iowa. Local theme for Bancroft History Assembly this year is “Early Iowa History.” Minutes from the May meeting were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was given and filed for audit.

The community project chosen for the coming year will be the Creston Area Food Pantry. The GFWC/IOWA District Convention will be held in Creston Oct. 14 at Salem Lutheran Church. The three Creston clubs will host the event.

The Constitution and by-laws of Bancroft History Assembly were reviewed. Club Collect was recited and meeting was adjourned.

PEO Chapter AZ

The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held Sept. 20 at the home of Cheryl Wilson with 21 members present.

The procedure for a P.E.O. chapter meeting and ceremony of initiation were exemplified for the visiting officer.

Refreshments were served by hostess Wilson and co-hostess Shirley Ide.

The next meeting will be Oct. 4 with Mary Ann Walsh as the hostess. The Nov. 1 meeting will be at the home of Kay Kinsella. Note this is a change from the yearbook.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Sept 28.

Canasta winners were Sherry Parrot, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Maxine May, third.

Barb Veitz won the door prize.

Marilyn Larimore will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Sept. 26 at Gibson Memorial Library with 10 members present. Jane Briley presided. Members reviewed information on software that was presented at the August meeting and voted to purchase it for the society’s website. Fundraising was discussed.

Roger Nurnberg alerted members to an update of Ancestry.com which is available to subscribers. He also reported on plans for a possible road closing in Pleasant Township which would affect access to Leas Cemetery.

Tessa Hull spoke of a project of photographing tombstones. She also provided lists of “jobs of the past” and “diseases of the past” with the modern equivalent.

Ruth McDowell gave the program on tracing family traits through use of a genogram. She focused on using research to make a family tree showing inherited diseases. She noted diagnoses have changed through the years, as have many other aspects of medicine.

McDowell served treats in observance of her birthday, and “Happy Birthday” was sung for her, Briley and Bernard Shea.

The next meeting is Oct. 24 at the library. Hull will give the program on “Hocus Pocus – the Salem Witches.”

Chapter LG P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met Sept. 20 at the home of Alice Bowers. Twelve members responded to roll call.

Bev Templeton was introduced by Marcia Riley. She brought us greetings from Chapter FN in Garner, her home, as well as from the executive board where she serves as state treasurer. She informed the club that P.E.O., internationally, has provided more than $283 million to 99,000 recipients to assist in their educational goals. The 382 chapters in the state of Iowa have provided $1.4 million to assist women in reaching their educational goals.

Templeton shared their goal of receiving two new members from each of the chapters in Iowa. Regarding the Reach for the Stars scholarship program, she shared if each of the chapters in Iowa contributed $20.17 to this project, the endowment would be self-sustaining. She also pointed out the International Convention of P.E.O. will be held in Des Moines in 2019. The theme for this convention will be “Welcome Home,” since Iowa is the birthplace of this organization.

The procedure for a P.E.O. meeting and the ceremony for a new member, Ellen Rinner, was performed for the visiting officer.

The next regular meeting will be 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at the home of Sandra Harris with Annette Rice serving as co-hostess.
