Donald L. Pfander, 84, of Corning died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at Corning Specialty Care in Corning.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., in Corning with Chuck Lyles and the Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Corning. Military honors will be provided by the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard and Corning American Legion OURCQ Post No. 117. Open visitation with family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed in Don's name for narcolepsy research. Donald L. Pfander, son of Burl Joseph and Martha Elvira (Trost) Pfander, was born April 27, 1932, in Creston. He graduated from Sharpsburg High School with the class of 1951. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 28, 1952, serving his country during the Korean War. He was awarded the Occupational Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged March 1, 1954.

On June 18, 1954, Don married Rose Marie Wilson at the Sharpsburg parsonage.

Don worked 32 years for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He first worked as a maintenance worker on the road crew and spent the last 20 years as a foreman for Adams County D.O.T.

As a young man, Don attended Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church and later became a member of Corning Christian Church. Don had previously served on the Adams County posse.

Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosie of Corning; daughters, Diane (Burton) James of Corning and Darla (Lowell) Dixon of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Shawn (Jennifer), Shannon, Shane (girlfriend Janet) and Shelby James and Alex and Joseph Dixon; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Daniel and Matthew Kinyon and Lucas and Gabriel James; sister Janet Barker (significant other Gene Howerton) of Apache Junction, Arizona; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his daughter Donette Pfander in 1992; parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hazel and Marion Wilson and brother-in-law Ronald Barker.
