SWCC volleyball struggles at weekend tournament

BEATRICE, NEBRASKA — Losing four matches isn’t the ideal start to a season, but the Southwestern Community College Spartans volleyball team didn’t expect to ride a rocket to the moon immediately to start this season.

“We’re not getting beat bad, we’re just having a hard time finishing,” head coach Aleesha Cleaver said.

“We would get in a lull where we would start really strong, then we would get around 18 points and then we would kind of let up,” Cleaver said. “We obviously aren’t a good enough team where we can do that. We have to stay strong the entire time.”

The Spartans fell in four straight matches over the course of Friday and Saturday afternoon at Southeast Community College.

A five-set first match against Southeast Community College tested the Spartans’ limits. SWCC lost by a 3-2. The scores for the sets were 22-25, 25-12, 24-14, 21-25 and 15-13.

The Spartans lost 3-1 to Williston State College (North Dakota), with the sets ending in scores of 17-25, 25-10, 25-11 and 26-24.

Cloud County Community College defeated the Spartans in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-12. 25-19.

Marshalltown Communtiy College also defeated the Spartans three sets to one. The sets went by scores of 10-25, 26-24, 27-29 and 19-25.
