Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Holy Spirit Hall. Seven members were in attendance.

President Meg Crawford opened up the meeting with the right to life prayers. Terry Madison read the secretary’s report from June. June Huewe gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved.

Velma Riegel sent out 24 baby congratulatory cards. Crawford gave the political report.

Under old business, Crawford thanked all for helping with the parades and county fair booth.

Under new business, there will be a trap shoot fundraiser for LC Clinic 9:30 a.m. Saturday Sept. 24, at the 3 Mile Range. The Life Chain will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Des Moines. Mary Merritt from Iowa Right to Life will be the speaker at the annual meeting 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Holy Spirit Hall. Crawford will get the newsletter out.

The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Holy Spirit Hall. Rich Madison made a motion, seconded by Steve Hunt, to adjourn.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Aug. 24.

Canasta winners were Rose Blakesley, first; Maxine May, second; and Mary Kline, third.

Marilyn Larimore won the door prize.

Loretta Kelly hosted cards and chatter Wednesday, Aug 31.

Canasta winners were Janet Kessler, first; Kelly, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Kelly won the door prize.

Sharon Gile will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Aug. 25 with Cheryl McClure as hostess. A thank you was received from Martha McAuley for visits and food during her recent recuperation. McClure read information on executive board duties from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi.

In observance of Beginning Day, the start of a new program year, Marilyn Larimore read a message from the international president of Beta Sigma Phi. Loretta Kelly gave reports of Beginning Day activities of other chapters. Members shared memories of when and how they joined the organization.

Dorothy Eyberg gave the program, sharing writing of author Harvey Mackay, on the topics of “Life is what you make it” and “Keeping life in perspective.”

TOPS #IA 1338

TOPS #IA1338 met 5 p.m. Aug. 22 at Creston First United Methodist Church to weighin. The meeting began at 5:30 p.m.

Leader Shellie Adams called the meeting to order and 10 members answered roll call. Best loser for the week was Monica Belew. Runners-up were Neoma Davis and Adams. A net loss of 8 3/4 pounds was recorded. Minutes were read by Bev Roberts and Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report, both were approved. Fines for Aug. 14 went to Adams and squares was won by Bev Lyon. The Red Can challenge for next week is “Eat one carb per meal this week.”

Belew gave the program on medication and food together. If you take a blood thinner, it is important to be aware of vitamin K in your food plan.

The “Inches Away” contest continues during the months ahead.

Adams called the meeting to order Aug. 29. Eleven members weighed in. Carol Sheldahl was best loser. Lyon, Barbara P. and Roberts tied for runner-up.

Roberts read the minutes and Brown gave the treasurer’s report, and both were approved. Belew received fines and Davis won squares.

Brown presented the program sharing information on sleep apnea and how improving your health with good meal choices: good fats and fiber from nuts, fruit and whole grains, along with strength training, help bones. Yoga plus other relaxing exercise can help your sleep. Brown shared clippings about a person who lost more than 100 pounds and the changes made.

The next meeting will be Sept. 12, due to Labor Day. Dianna Loomis will present the program, and the red can challenge is to use a small plate or bowl for every meal.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Windrow meeting room with 26 members and two guests attending. President Craig Mittag presided, Bob Miller gave the prayer and Ron Levine was the finemaster.

The club served open table Aug. 23 and club members were thanked for providing and serving food and desserts.

The Annual Pork Chop Dinner fundraiser will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at McKinley Park. Members have tickets available for sale now for $8 or $10 on the day of the event.

When attending September Kiwanis meetings, members are asked to bring non-perishable items for the two food pantries in town.

The program was given by the Rev. Ken Halbur from Holy Spirit and St. Edwards Catholic churches. He discussed the ReRun Shop and the changes made at the new store site. The shop helps provide funds for St. Malachy School and serves as a community outreach to nearby communities. It has been run by volunteers for many years.
