Dream postseason ride ends at state for NV baseball

Wolverines bow out in state quarterfinals

DES MOINES — Nodaway Valley's run to the state baseball tournament provided Wolverine backers many exciting moments.

Early on, the Wolverines gave their patrons plenty to cheer about during Friday night's Class 1A first-round game against top-ranked and top-seeded Newman Catholic of Mason City.

But state tournament tested Newman Catholic showed why it's a perennial power, and one of the favorites in this year's edition of state.

Newman Catholic ended Nodaway Valley's season with a 12-2, six inning win on a hot and humid night at Principal Park.

The Knights, 33-5, advance to play Remsen St. Mary's in Thursday's semifinal. First pitch is to be determined at Principal Park. Remsen St. Mary's advanced with a 10-5 win over Highland, Riverside, in Friday's other first-round game.

Nodaway Valley's season ends at 19-11.

Nodaway Valley struck first with two runs in the top of the first.

But that was all the offense the Wolverines could muster against Knights starter Caden Kratz.

Newman Catholic's bats came out hot and stayed that way much of the game. The Knights scored five in the first, three in the second, three in the third, then ended it with a run in the sixth.
