Kent Dinner Club

Kent Dinner Club met July 14 with 12 attending.

Next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Pizza Ranch.

VFW Post 1797

VFW Post 1797 met July 12 at the Elks Lodge in Creston. Twenty-three members and guests were present for dinner.

Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 20 members present.

Before the meeting, Danny Stephens and Randy Mcllravy from the Union County Fair asked if we would like to help put up military flags each morning at the fair with the help of 4-H and FFA members. Club members are very appreciative of this gesture. Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers report community service with 59 hours, hospital with 46 hours, cemetery with 12 hours and bloodmobile with 15 hours, for a total of 132 hours. Members also traveled 175 miles for veterans.

In old business, discussion was on the McKinley Park memorial with no action taken.

The IowaWorks had a Freedom Rock tour July 8. There was a bus available to tour Creston, Corning and Greenfield and a visit with Bubba Sorensen. Around 18 people attended.

In new business, plans for RAGBRAI include Honor Guard to give 21-gun salute Monday night at the Depot and plans to man the Freedom Rock during the day. Rotary will put flags up in Creston in the morning and take them down Tuesday. A banner for the VFW flag was presented by national VFW for 100 percent membership for 2015-16.

The post made a $100 donation to the Iowa State Fair booth. The club will man the booth Monday, Aug. 15. Also, anyone interested in Bahama cruise raffle tickets, contact Gary or Denny, for $20 for two people on a five-day cruise.

In state and district news, the next district meeting will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, in Creston.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Elks with 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. meeting. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met July 20.

Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Maxine May, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Mary Kline won the door prize.

Barb Veitz will host cards and chatter Wednesday, July 27.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library (FOL) met July 18 at the library. Members present were Starr Cure, Jessica Duncan, Connie Harden, Judy Hoakison, Cari Jack, Marisue Lewis, Kay Raymond, Karen Walter, Ann Coulter and David Hargrove.

Many thanks for their hard work goes to Harden and Mary Morris who will be leaving the FOL board.

Coulter, President of the Board of Trustees, said the board is working on fundraising, looking at software and preparing for the campaign kickoff from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the library.

Hargrove, Director of Library Operations, reported the capital campaign has three committees. There will be “Desserts and Details” home meetings to inform about the campaign in the near future. At the Capital Campaign Kickoff Aug. 7, Hargrove will present “Sunday with Matilda” about the history of the library. He urges all to come, as it will be fun for children as well.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read. The treasurer’s report will be put on hold until the next meeting.

The following officers were elected: Jessica Duncan, president, Karen Walter, vice president, Emily Cook, treasurer, Cari Jack, corresponding treasurer, and Kay Raymond, recording secretary.

The Scholastic Book Fair was very successful. Thanks go to Morris, chair of the event.

The FOL membership drive begins Monday, Aug. 1. The forms are the same and Cure will create fliers for the drive. Monday, Aug. 8, FOL will have a bake sale at the farmers market. The market is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The board members divided up responsibilities.

Jack will set up a meeting for the used book sale.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the library.

Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met July 14 at the Backdoor Restaurant and Lounge in Creston for a meal and social time.

President Cheryl McClure conducted a brief business meeting. She reported the executive committee completed the annual yardstick evaluation and achieved a two-star rating.

Correspondence from International included a sample membership brochure and information about an optional life-member fee.

Norma Putnam reviewed the Beta Sigma Phi handbook regarding rituals.

The service committee told of delivering cupcakes, decorated in the patriotic theme, to residents of assisted living on July 1. A recent visit also was made to member Martha McAuley, who is recovering from an illness.

Putnam will be hostess at the July 28 meeting.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Windrow meeting room with 20 members and one guest. President Craig Mittag presided, Ed Ritter gave the prayer and Bill Kunert was the finemaster.

Members discussed the preparations for the Creston Kiwanis pancake fundraiser from 4:30 a.m. until gone Tuesday, July 26, on High and Dry Road during RAGBRAI.

Keith Worland, YMCA director, gave the program. He gave trivia on the history of the YMCA organization. Worland also discussed the plans at the local YMCA to offer activities to focus on making families stronger physically and education opportunities.
