TOPS IA #1338

TOPS IA #1338 met to weigh in 5 p.m. June 27 at the First United Methodist Church in Creston. At 5:30 p.m., leader Anna Thompson called the meeting to order. Ten members recorded a 7.25 net loss for the week. Tied for best loser was Bev Lyon and Bev Roberts. Carol Sheldahl placed second. June’s best losers were Roberts and Mitzie Cellan, second.

Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report and Diana Loomis read the minutes from June 20. Both were approved. There was no old or new business or correspondence.

Squares went to Neoma Davis and fines from June 20 went to Lyon. The Red Can challenge was to consume the recommended number of fruits and vegetables per day for the next two weeks.

Thompson’s program was “Why Your Diet isn’t Working.” Popular myths and why they backfire were presented. Smarter strategies were reported.

Eight members answered role call July 11. Monica B. was the best loser. Davis was second.

Usual business was conducted as the meeting was called to order by Thompson. Squares went to Sheldahl. The lotto nears completion.

Davis shared “Eat, Then Walk? Walk, Then Eat?” Positives for both were given. Suggested was posting this poem on the fridge to encourage walking:

“Walking fast before a meal,

Reduces all that food appeal.

Walking slow after dinner,

Helps to make you even thinner.”

New officers for August 2016 through July 2017 were elected. Leader will be Shellie Adams, co-leader Thompson, treasurer, Brown, and secretary, Roberts. Davis and Sheldahl will continue as weight recorders.

Members were asked to substitute water for juices and sodas this next week. No meeting will be held July 25 due to RAGBRAI. Installation of officers will take place Aug. 1.

Afton Federated Garden Club

Area residents are invited to enter in the floriculture open class at the Union County Fair. Even beginners, anyone with lifetime love of flowers or children can find a division to enter.

Entries will be accepted from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 25, in the commercial building. Judging will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 25, with Sandy Gussman as judge.

Entry fee is 50 cents per item. Premiums paid will be $1.25 for blue, $1 for red and 75 cents for white ribbons.

All entries will be released from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 28.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met July 13.

Canasta winners were Joan Chubick, first; Loretta Kelly, second; and Wanda Nash, third.

Linda Clark won the door prize.

Rose Blakesley will host cards and chatter Wednesday, July 20.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at the Windrow meeting room with 21 members and two guests. President Craig Mittag presided, Drew Henderson gave the prayer and Jane Lowe was the finemaster.

Members signed up for work duties for the Creston Kiwanis pancake fundraiser during RAGBRAI from 4:30 a.m. until gone Tuesday morning, July 26, on High and Dry Road.

The program was given by the Rev. Brian Jack of Salem Lutheran Church who did a PowerPoint presentation of his trip to Haiti with Four Daughters, a nonprofit Christian group that helps women and daughters of Haiti with education and support. He also visited the Helping Hands 4 Haiti orphanage and held Vacation Bible School with treats and minor medical help for the children.
