Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Thursday, June 23, at the home of Marilyn Blazek. Cheryl McClure presided. All members were present and answered roll call by telling of plans for July 4.

Marilyn Larimore, service chairman, reviewed plans for the next activity at assisted living. Members will meet July 1 to deliver cupcakes, decorated in the patriotic theme, to all residents. Loretta Kelly, program chairman, announced plans for the next meeting as a supper at the Backdoor Lounge. Dorothy Eyberg read from the “Invitation to Life” book on the subject of rituals.

Norma Putnam gave the program on stress, how it affects a person and ways to relieve stress. She also shared “Did You Know?” facts on a variety of topics and concluded with several interesting quotes.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Holy Spirit hall. Vice president Richard Madison opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer. Six members were in attendance.

Terry Madison gave the secretary’s report from May and June Huewe gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved. Velma Riegel sent out six baby congratulatory cards.

Under old business, Bakers will drive in the Fourth of July parade and fair parade. The group will pass out pencils and stickers. A rose was sent to the funeral of Ed Nelson.

Under new business, Mary Merritt from lowans for Life will be the speaker at the annual meeting in October. The group will have a booth at the county fair.

Next meeting will be 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Holy Spirit hall. Riegel made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Pat Pokorny.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met June 27 at the library in Creston with 10 members present.

Wade Hartman, assisted by Beth Hartman, gave the program. He told about some ancestors, then posed problems he had encountered about one family line. Members searched various resources online to trace those family members. Records were found tracing the family from birth to death, Illinois to Missouri and the question, did the husband die or did he disappear to start a new family?

Jane Briley presided at the business meeting. The decision was made to postpone the Graceland Cemetery update project until later in the year. Briley reviewed details of the history and genealogy department at county fair and asked for volunteer helpers.

There is no meeting in July. The Aug. 22 meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at the library. After the business meeting, Dennis Allen of Iowa Genealogical Society will conduct a workshop with members who will work with a new computer program.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met July 6.

Canasta winners were Gwen Sandeman, first; Barb Veitz, second; and Marilyn Larimore, third.

Sharon Gile won the door prize.

Loretta Kelly will host cards and chatter Wednesday, July 13.

Creston Lions Club

Creston Lions Club met 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at Pizza Ranch. Mike Duckworth, president, opened the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Delmer Brown gave the invocation.

Guests introduced were Derek and Connie Thompson, Sophie and Adam Short, the grandchildren of Tom and Jerrie Henderson, Elaine Perry and Elizabeth of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, daughter and granddaughter of Beth Perry.

Following the meal, Past District Governor Dean Brant introduced guests Ken and Ardie Klemish of Adair. Ken is the newly elected district governor of District 9SW and Ardie is past district council chair. Ardie presented flag pins which have the words “We Serve” to the veterans who were present. Ken reviewed many of the projects of Lions Clubs, including KidSight and the Lions Club International Fund. Lions Clubs are also involved with the Leader Dog program. Ken will serve as district governor for one year.

Ralph Dillinger introduced David Hargrove, director of Gibson Memorial Library. Hargrove provided information about library needs and asked for a letter of support from Creston Lions Club for the library board’s plan to build an addition to the library siting a lack of space for children’s programming, public meetings and library materials. He said that the current architectural plan meets those needs and compliments the present structure. Gibson Memorial Library is the only public library in Union County.

Duckworth presided over the business meeting. Tom Braymen reported on the July 4 bingo stand. Another possible fund raiser was discussed. The board of directors will be holding a regular monthly meeting. Jo Duckworth asked for more volunteers to help with RAGBRAI. Twyla Brant won the drawing.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 2 at Pizza Ranch. Guests and prospective members may attend.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at the Windrow meeting room with 18 members and one guest. President Craig Mittag presided, Roger Lanning gave the prayer and Jim Morris was finemaster.

The club helped with parade set up and putting up and taking down of flags for the Fourth of July. The club now begins work on their pancake fundraiser for RAGBRAI from 4:30 a.m. until gone Tuesday, July 26, on High and Dry Road .

Jo Duckworth, Union County Emergency Management, gave the program on preparations for the RAGBRAI overnight stop with approximately 30,000 people coming to Creston July 25. There will be activities all day, with traffic in the west side of town very heavy and cell service slower.
