James Berdine, 87, of Winterset, formerly of Shannon City, died Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Community Care Center in Stuart.

Celebration of life services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. The Rev. Lila Greene will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in rural Shannon City. Open visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at the funeral home in Afton with family present from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials are to be determined. James Elton Berdine, son of Earl Dewey and Pansy Belle Berdine, was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Nicollet, Minnesota. He attended Shannon City High School and graduated with the class of 1947.

On Sept. 4, 1949, James married Betty Rose Wagner in West Des Moines. They lived a long portion of their lives in Afton. Jim and Betty moved to a farm near Shannon City in 1978 and on to Winterset in 2011. Jim worked most of his life as a cross-country truck driver before moving to the farm.

James was an active member of Shannon City Community Church for many years.

James is survived by his wife Betty; brother Earl (Jackie) Berdine of Omaha, Nebraska; sons, Ron (Sharon) Berdine of Earlham, Richard (Deniz) Berdine of Cedar Crest, New Mexico, and Randy (Shelly) Berdine of Huddleston, Virginia; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his parents, brother Russell and sister Juanita.
