John R. McFee, 63, of Creston died Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 23, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Open visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 22, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. John Reed McFee, son of Hugh Lynford McFee and Esther May (Pridgen) McFee, was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Creston. He was raised near Afton and educated at East Union schools through 10th grade, graduating from Creston High School in 1971.

John lived most of his life in the Creston area. One of his first jobs was with Pittsburg Steel in Des Moines. John had been married and divorced. Early on, he operated Hobo’s Hideaway bar in Creston. Truck driving was John’s primary occupation. Early on, he did farm work and hauling for Buck Buxton and Kenny Calvin. He drove for Warner Trucking, Sheldon Trucking, other nationally known trucking companies, Creston Coop and most recently, with Mark O’Riley and numerous other area farmers. While living in Colorado, John also worked for John Henderson in Colorado, doing sales and repairs of typewriters and computers.

John grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Afton and was formerly a member of Masonic Lodge of Afton.

John is survived by his sister Kathryn (Jack) Adams of Creston, sister-in-law Carol McFee of Rosalie, Nebraska; brother-in-law Lee Von Stein of Creston; 10 nieces and nephews, Dana (Shellie) Adams of Creston, Mike (Elizabeth) Adams of Lawrence, Kansas, Darin (Cindy) Adams of Creston, David (Danielle) Adams of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Aaron (Ronnie) Harless of Glenwood, Brooke Burgoin of Glenwood, Carrie Dowda of Creston, JoAnn (Darrin) Nauman of Creston, Jarita (Doug) Heidebrink of Ottumwa and Rob (Jeanette) McFee of Dakota City, Nebraska; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; and a great-great-niece and great-great-nephew.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ellen Von Stein, Mary Sevier, Karen Miller and two in infancy; and brother Bob McFee.
