VFW Post 1797

VFW Post 1797 met May 10 at the Elks Lodge in Creston. Twenty-four members and guests were present for dinner.

Senior Vice Commander Frank Riley called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 19 members present.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers reported 22 hours of community service, 62 hours for hospital, 27 hours for honor guard and 20 hours for bloodmobile for a total of 131 hours. Members also traveled 734 miles for veterans.

In old business, election of officers for 2016-17 was held, purchasing flag poles for Graceland Cemetery was approved and also a reminder that Memorial Day programs will be held Monday, May 30, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with Daughters of the American Revolution at McKinley Park, 9:30 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 10:45 a.m. at Graceland Cemetery and 11:30 a.m. Fairview Cemetery in Afton.

In new business, new officers for 2016-2017 are Commander Gary O’Daniels, Senior Vice Riley, Junior Vice James Flowers, Q-master Dennis Abel, Chaplain Ricky Leonard, Surgeon Robert Clark, three-year trustee Ron Gordon, two-year trustee Ron Jackson and one-year trustee John Parkins. Also discussed was a request from Creston Park and Recreation to install a new wooden fence at the VFW field on Highway 34. A motion was made to allow this and was passed.

In district and state information, the state VFW meeting will be held June 2-6 in Dubuque.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday June 14 at the Elks with a 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. meeting. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met May 25.

Canasta winners were Janet Kessler, first; Marilyn Larimore, second; and Linda Clark, third.

Gwen Sandeman won the door prize.

The board will host cards and chatter Wednesday, June 1.

Alpha Sigma

Iowa Alpha Sigma Master No. 1632 met Thursday, May 19, at the home of Cheryl McClure for their Mother’s Day meeting.

McClure, president, called the meeting to order with members repeating the opening ritual. Roll call was answered by seven members telling if they have their flowers planted.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Martha McAuley reported the general fund balance. Dues will be collected at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be May 26 at the home of Loretta Kelly. There were no reports of the ways and means and telephone committee. Social committee reported there would be a Mother’s Day observance after the meeting.

McClure read from the gray book on motions. There was discussion on the state convention in Kansas City. No communication has been received. Pat Fils moved and Marilyn Larimore seconded the meeting be adjourned.

McClure gave the program on Mother’s Day. She read several poems from the book, “Mother,” by Maya Angelou.

Members repeated the closing ritual in unison, joined hands for the Mizpah, and then enjoyed refreshments of a Mother’s Day cake with ice cream and cute nut cups, punch and coffee.
