Throwback Thursday

Today is May 5, the 126th day of the year. It’s a leap year. So, there are 240 days left in 2016. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (May 2-8) in history:

10 years ago

Becky Baker of Xi Beta Psi, Dorothy Eyberg of Laureate Tau, Billie Jo Greene of Eta Psi and Jan Krantz of Xi Theta Chi were crowned “girls of the year” at Beta Sigma Phi Sorority’s 75th anniversary of Founder’s Day at Pizza Ranch in Creston.

Gerald Kasal missed by one day a ceremony honoring his son’s heroism. He died of cancer the day before his son Brad, who had been in the Marines nearly 20 years, was decorated with the Navy Cross, one of the nation’s highest military honors. Family and friends watched the ceremony conducted at Camp Pendleton in California by a live video conference hookup at Southwestern Community College. Brad received the honor for extraordinary heroism and severe injuries sustained in a military operation Nov. 13, 2004.

Creston native Dustin Baird was engulfed by a life of music since childhood playing drums, harmonica, rhythm and bass guitars in drum line and the school band, and also was a member of the National Anthem Singers at CHS. He could also add a national tour with The Josh Davis’ Band from Des Moines to his credit. The band released their full-length album of no-frills roots-rock, “The White Whale” on March 21.

Chad Means received the Best Thespian and American Choral Director Association Choral awards, Jody Shoenhair received the Arion award and Aaron Richardson received the John Philip Sousa award at the Creston High School fine arts awards ceremony. Sherry Williams received the Friends of the Arts award sponsored by the Creston Activity Boosters from the previous year’s recipients, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Giles.

Bunn-O-Matic employees Cyndy Ripperger, Eula Dolecheck, Shirley Loomis, Sharon McKinney, Joyce England, Candace Engstrom, Kathy Smith, Dora Madison, and Mick Waddingham formed a team that was chosen as winners of the Rossiter and Associates team of the year award. They were chosen from more than 350 teams in 16 states for their effort to get employees involved with the program, saving the company more than $400,000 in workers compensation and medical expenses.

50 years ago

Creston High School students celebrated many end of year activities. A mixed double quartet with members Mary Jo Martin, Linda Waltersdorf, Beverly Looney, Lana Minnick, Ray Fauver, Todd Phillipe, Jere Francis and Hal Petznick performed at the spring vocal concert. Girls C-Club initiated 21 new members who had earned 300 points in Girls Recreation Association. Seniors were Sherry Jones, Marcia Rewerts, Mary Lou Rundlett, Jacque Shrimpton, Carol Swan, Janet Johnston, Cindy Sharp, Jane Posten and Silvana Piccinini. Junior initiates were Martha Carlson, Pam Paxson, Susan Prescott, Becky Sandeman, Charol Smith, Cathy Cruise, Dianne Fisher, Karen Tullis, Linda Gaidies, Pam Schrodt, Peggy Tackett and Barb Thompson.

Copies of the S and H Green Stamp “Ideabook” were distributed in Creston. Wesley Freemyer, manager of United Food store which was the chief headquarters for the stamps in Creston, told of a greatly expanded number of items including many leisure time items.
