Crisp passing fuels Rams in 8-0 win over Panthers

GLENWOOD — Ninth-ranked Glenwood scored four goals in each half in beating the Creston boys Thursday, 8-0.

Fernando Gonzales scored four goals for the Rams, including a header with 2:24 left to cap the scoring. Andy Staiert had a goal and assist for Glenwood, now 5-0 in first place in the Hawkeye 10 Conference and 9-1 overall.

Evan Jacobson had five shots and goalkeeper Payton Pryor made 21 saves for Creston, which fell to 0-5 and 2-9.

"Four years ago when we played Glenwood we lost 9-2, and this (Ram) team reminds me of that team," Creston coach Lucian Diaconu said. "We were overwhelmed with the passes that they put together. Five of their goals came on break throughs into open space against our keeper. I cannot blame Payton for not getting out of the box because he does not have that experience yet."

In the second half, the Panther coaches brought sophomore Jacobson back to an offensive midfield position to attack from the left side after he'd been shifted to defense. It seemed to spark more action in conjunction with Ben Irr and Gavin Woods in the offensive flow.

"Evan created some opportunities for us and we played more offensively in the second half," Diaconu said. "We got in their box a couple of times, but not successfully."

With substate groupings announced Thursday and the possibility of a rematch in the postseason, Diaconu said a more solid approach would be necessary for more success.

"If we play Glenwood again, we will adjust the formation into a more defensive formation," the Panther coach said. "Tonight, we were tired, playing our third game of this week. I thought Ben Irr had a good game tonight and as he starts feeling better I think he can be involved in us getting more explosive runs before the playoffs start."

Irr recently returned to the lineup after suffering a broken leg last winter.

Glenwood won a 40-minute JV match Thursday, 1-0. Henrik Schulz was goalkeeper for the JV as Pryor had a strong game in the defensive field.

The Panthers travel to Indianola on Tuesday.
