SW Valley coach

CORNING — Anthony Donahoo, Corning native who has coached football, basketball, track and baseball for Creston Community Schools as a teacher at Creston High School, has been named head football coach and physical education teacher at Southwest Valley High School. Donahoo oversees the Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) program at CHS.

In addition, Southwest Valley wrestling coach Jason Wetzel has been named athletic director at the school succeeding Mat Beu, who has accepted a similar position at Maryville, Missouri.

Youth contest

Major League Baseball's Pitch, Hit & Run competition will be a part of Healthy Kids Day Saturday at Southern Prairie YMCA.

The competition, which is free of charge, is open to boys and girls ages 7-14. Participants must have a copy of their birth certificate and a registration form and waiver completed by a parent or guardian. It is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

There will be baseball and softball competitions in pitching strikes to a designated target; hitting from a batting tee for distance and accuracy; and running from second base to home plate for time.

Soccer substates

Boys soccer substate groupings were announced Thursday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for substate play to be held May 23, 25, 28.

In Class 2A Substate 8, Creston is grouped with three ranked teams and another that has received votes. Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic is No. 5, Glenwood is ranked ninth and Denison-Schleswig is No. 13. Harlan has received votes. Creston and Carroll are the other teams.

No. 11 Winterset and sixth-ranked ADM are both in Substate 6.

In Class 1A, Atlantic and Nodaway Valley are in Substate 7, which includes fifth-ranked Pella Christian and Des Moines Christian, which has received ratings votes. Other teams are AHSTW, Ankeny Christian Academy and West Central Valley.

No. 14 Council Bluffs St. Albert and ninth-ranked Underwood are in Substate 8 along with Clarinda Academy, Missouri Valley, Oakland Riverside, Treynor and Tri-Center.
