Five minutes with Joel Wires, SWCC marketing coordinator/designer

AGE: 33

HOMETOWN: Creston

FAMILY: Wife Amber; children Wesley, 8, Olivia, 6, Megan, 4, Taylor, 2

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR SWCC? Since December of 2007

WHAT ARE YOU IN CHARGE OF IN YOUR POSITION? Acting webmaster, print and digital design, photography and occasional videography

BEST PART OF YOUR JOB: The variety

TOUGHEST PART OF YOUR JOB: Trying to manage time on projects because some need to be done right way, while others are long-term projects. So, making sure long-term projects don't get rushed into short-term projects is a challenge.

WHEN DID YOU DEVELOP AN INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY? I liked it as a kid and would play around with my mom's old SLR Minolta both with and without film. But, I didn't plan on doing anything with photography until I started working at a design firm in Des Moines, where I learned a lot of tricks and learned through trial and error.

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT PHOTOS WITH? For work, a Canon 60D. I just use a little Canon Rebel XS for personal use, like taking photos at Wesley's soccer games.

FAVORITE SUBJECT MATTER TO PHOTOGRAPH OFF THE JOB: Action stuff, where you can freeze the moment, or anything I've never photographed before

FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR AT SWCC: That's two-fold, and the two actually seem to contradict each other. Summer because all the craziness goes on hold, and early fall because everyone's excited to be back on campus. Everything in between is just a roller coaster.

FAVORITE PHOTO(S) YOU'VE CAPTURED: A photo of a student welding and a photo of an old Des Moines MTR bus at my mother-in-law's in New Sharon

HOBBIES: Juggling – seven balls or five clubs; woodworking; disc golf, fishing

IF YOU HAD A TIME TRAVEL MACHINE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Even though I love technology, probably pioneer times. Having moved out to the country, I think it would be fun to learn to build a log cabin or go out with a rifle and bring back dinner.

WEBSITE/APP YOU VISIT MOST OFTEN: Facebook and inDesign. I wouldn't say Photoshop because I try to get things right in camera so that I don't have to use Photoshop.
