Ranked scorer

Creston senior Taylor Briley currently ranks fifth among Creston five-player girls basketball career scorers with 636 points.

She was not included in a chart of top 10 career scorers in Monday’s News Advertiser.

SWCC game

With Tuesday’s home game vs. Central College JV cancelled because of inclement weather, the Southwestern men’s basketball team will play Grand View JV at home at 6 p.m. today, according to SWCC coach and athletic director Todd Lorensen.

Team champs

STORM LAKE — The Morningside College women’s track and field team edged Dordt College by one point for the team title here Saturday at the Buena Vista University Dennis Young Classic.

The Mustangs amassed 144 team points, just ahead of Dordt in the six-team field.

The Mustang women won four events, including junior Tiffany Shepherd of Corning winning the women’s 3,000 meters with her clocking of 10:42.77. Shepherd also finished runner-up in the 1,000 meters with her time of 3:12.79.

Aurora Arevalo, a freshman from Lenox, finished third in the 200 meter dash with her time of 27.02 and fourth in the 60 meter dash with a clocking of 8.10.

Arevalo also ran on Morningside’s second-place 4x200 relay team that also included junior Taylor Hudson, a former Creston Panther. Arevalo and Hudson teamed with Courtney Scheffler of Harlan and Eleka Joseph to run 1:49.16.

Freshman Grant Staats of Mount Ayr finished 17th in the 400 meter dash with his time of 54.75 and also ran on Morningside’s 4x100 relay “C” team, which finished 10th in 3:48.30.

Morningside competes in the Bunea Vista Invitational on Friday.

800 record

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Iowa Central Community College sophomore Noah Larsen, a three-time state champion for Mount Ayr in high school, broke the Iowa Central school record in the indoor 800 meters here at the South Dakota State University Indoor Open on Jan. 23.

Larsen ran 1:52.24 to finish third in the race behind a pair of NCAA Division I athletes. His time also qualifies him for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships to be held March 4-5 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Larsen also qualified for nationals in the 600 meters on Saturday at the Jack Johnson Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Triton sophomore finished seventh in the event with his time of 1:22.16.

Larsen qualified for nationals in the 1,000 meters on Jan. 16 at the Iowa Duals hosted by University of Iowa. Larsen ran 2:27.01 to win the event.

Currently, Larsen ranks first nationally in the NJCAA in the 1,000 meters, third in the 800 meters and ninth in the 600 meters.

Iowa Central travels to the University of Nebraska on Friday, with another group of athletes headed to Minnesota State on Saturday.

Concordia Classic

SEWARD, Neb. — Northwest Missouri State University competed at the Concordia Classic here on Friday and Saturday.

Senior Audrey Bolinger of Creston finished 13th in the 400 meter dash with her time of 1:02.69 and fifth in the 60 meter hurdles, running 9.19 seconds after running 9.21 to qualify fourth to finals.

Bearcat freshman Maria Mostek of Creston finished 12th in the mile run with her time of 5:45.57.

Sophomore Brandon Phipps of Creston ran 9:14.26 for ninth place in the 3,000 meter run.

Freshman Bryce Briley of Creston took 16th in the 800 meter run, clocking a time of 2:05.90 and ran on Northwest Missouri State’s 4x400 relay team that finished eighth in 3:35.70.
