Joel Van Hal, 46, of Creston, formerly of Pella, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at his home in Creston.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will be at Portergrove Cemetery in Pella. Pella visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Garden Chapel Funeral Home, 1301 Main St., in Pella. Creston visitation with family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. No local viewing will be held. Memorials may be given to Hope Ministries. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Joel Lynn Van Hal, son of Jerry and Darlene (Bensink) Van Hal, was born Jan. 2, 1969, in Newton. He was a 1987 graduate of Pella Christian High School and then attended Dordt College and the University of Iowa.

On June 11, 2011, Joel married Stacy Lynn Carney at the Abundant Life Family Church in Creston. He was a surveyor for Garden and Associates Engineering for 14 years. Joel helped people especially as an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, and he attended spiritual retreats for AA. Joel was a member and elder for Abundant Life Church in Creston.

Joel is survived by his wife Stacy; step-son Mason Wagaman; mother Darlene Van Hal; siblings, Darla (Russell) Dykstra of Kansas City, Missouri, and their children Dustin, Dakota and Dylan, Denise (J. Scott) Kimm of Churchill, Montana, and their children Jonathan (Sammie), Aaron and Rose, and Todd (Diana) Van Hal of Eldridge and their children Leah and Drew; parents-in-law Ellie and Richard Carney; sister-in-law Terry Wallace and her children Erin and Richard Wallace; and great-nephews, Nate and Ryder Wallace.

Joel is preceded in death by his father Jerry and sister-in-law Kathy Carney.
