Mustangs roll

SIOUX CITY — Redshirt freshman Briar Evans of Creston caught one pass for 22 yards on a 46-yard scoring drive in the first quarter as part of Morningside’s 51-6 NAIA playoff quarterfinal win over Tabor College of Hillsboro, Kan.

Top-rated Morningside (12-1) hosts defending national champion Southern Oregon (10-2), now ranked seventh, in a noon matchup Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium. Eighth-ranked Tabor bowed out at 11-2.

The Mustangs are in the semifinals for the fourth year in a row and are riding a nine-game winning streak since a 33-30 loss against two-time reigning NCAA Division III national champion University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sept. 24.

Southern Oregon is coming off a 24-19 quarterfinal victory at No. 2 Baker University.

Bearcats advance

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Northwest Missouri State dominated Humboldt State, 54-7, in a Division II second-round playoff game Saturday at Bearcat Stadium.

Senior quarterback Brady Bolles completed 26-of-33 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. The Northwest defense, ranked first in Division II allowing just 11.9 points per game entering Saturday, limited the nation’s fourth-ranked offense to 48 total yards on 45 offensive plays.

Defensive end Collin Bevins of Creston had one solo tackle, three assisted tackles, two tackles for losses for a total of 11 yards, including a 6-yard quarterback sack.

Northwest (12-0, 11-0 conference) will move on to the Super Region 3 final with eight teams left in Division II. The Bearcats await a rematch against MIAA opponent Emporia State (11-2), which took down Henderson State on Saturday, 29-3.

The matchup is a rematch of the Nov. 7 game, which Northwest won 44-10 to clinch the outright MIAA title.

The Northwest athletic department announced Monday morning that kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Bearcat Stadium. Ticket prices are $15 for reserved seats for anyone ages 3 and up. Standing room only tickets are $10.

Tourney record

LINCOLN, Neb. — Junior forward Colby Taylor of Creston racked up a career-high 42 points Saturday but the Central College men’s basketball squad suffered its first loss in a shootout at Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday, 107-102 in overtime.

Taylor’s 42 points are the most for a Dutch player since Scott Huisman scored 43 in 2003 against Upper Iowa and just three off the school record of 45. It’s a new scoring record for the Snyder Classic tournament, topping Dubuque’s Andre Norris’ 36, set earlier Saturday.

Taylor was 16-of-24 from the floor and made five of his seven attempts from behind the arc. He also brought down 13 boards to notch his 14th-career double-double and second of the season.

“Colby is playing at a high level right now,” coach Craig Douma said. “He’s shooting the ball well and did a great job tonight scoring off inbound plays.”

But the Dutch (4-1) saw a 19-point first-half lead and a 10-point halftime advantage slip away against Nebraska Wesleyan (5-2). The Prairie Wolves did most of their damage from behind the arc, knocking down 17-of-46 3-pointers.

Junior forward Ryan Kunkel of Solon tallied his second-consecutive double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kunkel and Taylor were both named to the all-tournament team.

On Friday Taylor had 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 122-93 Dutch victory over Greenville college.
