Wayne Henry

Wayne Henry, 78, who was raised in Creston, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, in Davenport.

In 1937, Wayne was born in Columbus, Nebraska, to Clarence and Caryl Henry. He played clarinet in the Creston and University of Iowa bands, and later in the Army Band. Wayne delivered newspapers for the Creston News Advertiser, and while attending Creston Junior College, worked in the Creston News Advertiser office.

While attending the University of Iowa, Wayne met Joan Anderson, whom he married in 1960 in Massachusetts. Joan preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 2013.

Wayne was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1963, both in the Army Band and in the Army Security Agency. After active military duty, Wayne spent a career in U.S. Civil Service in many capacities in the United States and abroad, including Turkey, Japan and Germany. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1976 until retirement in 2000.

Wayne and Joan were members of Edgewood Baptist Church in Rock Island, where they sang in the choir and taught junior church. They sang and played for retirement residences, and Wayne tutored mathematics in elementary schools.

Survivors include daughters, Theresa (Tony) Phillips of Eldridge and Diane (Steve) Stokes of Bloomington, Minnesota; grandchildren, Jackie (Xavier) Vargas, Rachel Stokes, Jessica Phillips, Danielle Phillips and Bethany Phillips; great-grandchild Josiah Vargas and sisters, Clarine (Al) Abramowitz of Creston and Cheryl Henry of New Brighton, Minnesota.
