Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina were the most popular candidates among Creston students at Union County’s Iowa Youth Caucus held Thursday at Creston High School.

This was the first year for the free, bipartisan event, which teaches Iowa teenagers about the importance and formats of the Iowa caucuses.

The event was launched by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate in conjunction with the state’s Democratic and Republican parties.

Twenty-two counties are participating statewide, and nearly 1,000 Iowa students have cast their votes for a Republican and Democratic candidate so far, with one county yet to vote. In Creston, 15 students voted at the event.

Statewide, Sanders is the highest vote-getter overall with 52.7 percent of the Democratic vote. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson leads all Republican candidates with 22.3 percent.
