Club news

DAR, Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter

The meeting was called to order by chapter regent Theresa Bahniuk of Lamoni, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Summit House in Creston.

Those present were Bahniuk, Jane Briley, Bonnie Riepe, Marj Kinkade, Connie Kinkade, Elaine Brown, Jan Morgan, Jackie Beard, Charlotte Asell, Pam Marvin and Lynne Schlaht. The roll call topic this month was “A woman in history that you admire.”

This month women’s issues chairman, Morgan, of Greenfield gave a report on stress. She shared different types of stress and possible reactions to stress. She offered simple everyday tips on relieving stress and closed the program with a stress management, relaxation technique.

Members shared the opening ritual, followed by the presentation of the president general’s message by Riepe of Afton. The national defense report was given by Bahniuk. Minutes from the October 2015 meeting had been presented electronically and were approved unanimously. The treasurer’s report was presented by Riepe. It was approved unanimously.

Committee reports were presented. The American Indian moment by Marvin of Chariton shared a passage from a Western Shoshone Indian lady. “We pray for all life, spirit life, human life, animal life, insect life, all life is included in seasonal ceremonies.”

Commemorative events presented by Connie Kinkade of Creston was about the first Presidential tour in November of 1789. George Washington traveled four weeks by stagecoach throughout New England, visiting all the northern states that had ratified the U.S. Constitution.

The conservation moment was presented by Bahniuk and Schlaht of Creston about the Federalist Papers. The flag moment, about America’s tallest flagpole in Wisconsin was given by Marvin. The women’s issues moment, given by Morgan, was about the evolution of women’s fashions, in relation to their shifting roles in society. Sunshine moment was presented by Marj Kinkade of Creston – we heard about the birthday and get well cards she sent to Jeanne Collison of South Dakota, Michele Richardson of New York, Jo Walter of Lenox, Raidene Sticken of Creston, Hazel Braby of Leon and the family of Carla Perks. The chapter history moment was presented by Marj. She shared the story of the silver tray presented to the Iowa Society Daughters of the American Revolution as a traveling trophy for the chapter with the most new members. Vietnam moment was given by Connie about the dedication in November, 1982, of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. The wall is inscribed with the names of 57,939 Americans who died in the conflict arranged by date of death, not by rank.

During old business, we were reminded to bring our donations of hair brushes and disposable razors for the VA Hospital. We were also reminded to prepare holiday cards for the vets at the hospital. These will be delivered in person. Marj gave us an update on three prospective members who are awaiting verification of their application papers. Bahniuk informed those who didn’t see it online that we are all encouraged to write a short story about one of our heirlooms for the ISDAR historic preservation committee project. They will be posted online. Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter’s monthly celebrate America volunteer hours tally is 1,120.

During new business, we were reminded that we have a flag presentation and dedication immediately following the meeting at 11:30. It will be at McKinley Park in Creston, along with the Creston Parks and Recreation Department. It was also suggested that we look into participating in a flag disposal ceremony, possibly around Flag Day next spring. We discussed having dedication ceremonies for members who have passed away and have requested a grave marker. We also discussed donating a book to the NSDAR library. Announcements were presented. The closing prayer was offered by chapter chaplain Connie.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Canasta winners were Connie Bailey, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Joan Chubick, third.

Beulah McDonald won the door prize.

Cards and chatter will be at Pizza Ranch 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2.

GRMC Auxillary

The GRMC Auxillary meeting was called to order Monday, Nov. 9, by Lois with eight present. Both agenda and minutes were approved.

Monte Neitzel reported that new doctors are being successfully recruited in the fields of surgery, family practice, OBGYN, ENT, ER and internal medicine. He also reported that cardiac rehab would be moving to rehab, and orthopedics would be moving upstairs into the old cardiac rehab area. Construction needed to support the move should start in January with a finish date in June.

The report on the women’s health event was very positive. Attendance was around 150. The entertainment and food garnered rave reviews. Tentative plans are to sponsor another event in two years.

The University of Iowa remitted a check for $500 since one of the scholarship recipients will not be returning for the spring semester. She will be contacted regarding her plans.

The Lights for Loved Ones brochures are in the works. Tammy has one more year as the foundation liaison. New volunteers are needed, especially in the SHIIP office. Next meeting will be 10 a.m. Dec. 14 at Lois’ house.

Mary Circle

Mary Circle of First Christian Church met Nov. 19 at the church. Averil Lyman was hostess with 11 members present. President Fils opened the meeting with the diciple women’s prayer. Joyce read the minutes of the last meeting. Barb gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

There was no old business. New business discussed was the Dec. 17 meeting will be held 11:30 a.m. at Pizza Ranch, cookies and lunch will be served for the Sunday school Christmas program after services Dec. 6 and also Dec. 13, and plans to clean the kitchen after the holidays.

Alice Bowers made a motion to adjourn meeting. Florence gave the lesson on “Really Sad Girls of the Bible.” The hostess served refreshments.

Creston United Methodist Women

The executive committee of the Creston United Methodist Women met 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in Fellowship Hall. Co-president Sandy McNichols presided. Joys and concerns were shared. Scripture from Romans 12:3-8 was read after which “Lessons from Geese” was read presenting facts about geese and lessons to be learned from them. Minutes from the October executive meeting and the treasurer’s report were approved. The 2016 yearbook is being proofread and will be assembled by the December meeting. Two members attended the mission study in Ellston in October. The October fundraising dinner was evaluated and determined what changes needed to be made. There being no more business, the meeting was adjourned.

Morning Circle met 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 in Fellowship Hall. Lois Jay was hostess and there were nine members present. Judy Kading presided and Beth Perry gave the devotions. Kading gave a book report on “Coffee, Tea and Holy Water.” The group voted on a recipient for the special mission recognition. Velma Riegel gave the program entitled “World Thank Offering: A Welcoming Spirit.” The meeting was closed with everyone reciting the November Bible verse Genesis 12:1.

Evening Circle met 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Fellowship Hall with 11 members in attendance. Rosalie Denton presided. Evening circle is hostess for the unit meeting on Dec. 3, so plans were made for the table decorations and refreshments. Denton presented the program entitled “World Thank Offering: A Welcoming Spirit.”
