CLARINDA — The Creston/O-M seventh-graders edged Clarinda Thursday, 18-15, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season.

The Panthers struck first with a 44-yard run midway through the first quarter by Kolby Hulett.

The Cardinals answered with a 40-yard scoring pass and drop-kick extra point for a 7-6 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Creston/O-M quarterback Cael Kralik put his team in scoring position with a long run around the right side before he scored from 2 yards and a 12-7 Panther lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Creston/O-M again scored on a Hulett 14-yard run around the right side with blocking by Steven Mills and Brance Baker.

The Cardinals put together a scoring drive to come within the final three-point margin.

Keegan Smith covered the ball on Clarinda’s onside kick attempt to seal the victory.

Hulett rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Kralik ran for 38 yards and passed to Jackson Kinsella for a 22-yard gain during a scoring drive.

Defensively, Hulett had a team-high six tackles with a 10-yard sack.

“Clarinda made us play physical football for the first time this year, and our boys rose to the challenge,” coach Dick Clark said. “We had to finally put together some sustained drives on offense and make some adjustments on defense to their power formations. It was also the first time since I’ve been here that a team has made a place kick against us, and it was a dropkick!”

Creston/O-M assistant coach Jerry Hartman was likewise pleased.

“We knew from talking to their coach we were in for a battle,” Hartman said. “We had told the boys that they were quick and ran an offense based on deception. The boys did what they needed to do to get the win, and it woke them up as to the level of play needed to consistently win.”
