Mount Ayr 42, Earlham 0

MOUNT AYR — In a similar fashion to last year’s Class A quarterfinal victory over Earlham, Mount Ayr overwhelmed the Cardinals in the second half here Friday for a 42-0 win.

Mount Ayr only ran about 14 plays on offense in the first half, as Earlham succeeded in chewing up clock. But the Raiders still took a 13-0 lead into the half, thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Jacob Taylor to Kyle Dolecheck.

Things snowballed in a hurry in the second half, though. The opening kickoff was mishandled by Earlham, which led to Mount Ayr recovering on the 2-yard line and a Cal Daughton touchdown run.

Kyle Dolecheck intercepted Earlham on a first down pass, which led to a Taylor touchdown run. Dolecheck added a touchdown run and Caleb Schnoor had a pick six, as Mount Ayr scored four touchdowns in a 7-minute span.

“It really snowballed there in that third quarter,” Mount Ayr co-coach Delwyn Showalter said. “Once we got going, they couldn’t stop us at that point. The second half, we played a lot better defensively. They had 168 yards rushing. I’m sure well over 100 of that had to be in the first half. We did a nice job second half of shutting them down.”

Caleb Schnoor led the Mount Ayr defense with nine tackles and the interception return for a touchdown.

“Caleb Schnoor really had an outstanding ballgame,” Showalter said. “Really was, I thought, his best ballgame of the year. Outstanding job of leading our defense.”

Taylor finished 5-of-9 passing for 131 yards and two touchdowns, as Dolecheck caught three passes for 83 yards. Nick Wurster added one catch for 42 yards. Taylor had 51 rushing yards and Daughton added 48.

Kade Means also finished with nine tackles, while Logan Stark and Clay Wimer each had eight tackles.

Mount Ayr improved to 5-2 for the season and 5-0 in Class A District 8, setting up a showdown with unbeaten and fourth-ranked Pleasantville for the district title at Pleasantville on Friday.

Nodaway Valley 30, MSM 13

MARTENSDALE — Nodaway Valley took another step in keeping its playoff hopes alive with a 30-13 win here Friday against Martensdale-St. Marys.

The Wolverines improved to 3-4 for the season and 2-3 in Class A District 8 with the win. Nodaway Valley still needs to win out against Southeast Warren and Bedford in the final two weeks of the season to earn a playoff berth.

Brennen Weiland ran for 307 yards and four touchdowns on 43 carries, and Jared Corder added 95 rushing yards and one touchdown on seven carries to lead the Wolverines to victory.

“Our line did a great job against a bigger team,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said.

The Wolverines had a rocky start to the game, however. The Blue Devils returned the opening kickoff to the Nodaway Valley 2-yard line.

“Here is where the defense set the tone and after stops on first and second down, forced a turnover recovered in the end zone,” Shantz said. “Our offense took over and after an 11-play drive, scored. We are getting better executing on both sides of the ball and continued this throughout the game.”

The Wolverines held Martensdale-St. Marys to just 146 total yards of offense on the night, surrendering only seven first downs.

Nodaway Valley hosts Southeast Warren (2-5, 1-4) on Friday.
