Mount Ayr 41, Bedford 13

BEDFORD — For the fourth week in a row, Mount Ayr scored on either its first or second play from scrimmage and the Raiders never looked back in a 41-13 rout of rival Bedford here Friday.

Cal Daughton took the second play from scrimmage 41 yards for a touchdown.

“He got to the corner in a hurry and then he just outran everybody,” Mount Ayr co-coach Delwyn Showalter said. “That’s a big thrill for him. He’s got a lot of relatives in Bedford, so he was excited about that.”

Daughton led Mount Ayr with 89 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

The Raiders scored 21 points in the second quarter to break the game open. Jacob Taylor hit Kyle Dolecheck with a short pass that Dolecheck broke free for a 60-yard touchdown on. Taylor added a pair of short TD runs.

Taylor was 3-of-6 passing for 121 yards, while eight Raider players carried the ball multiple times, keeping the defense off balance and fresh legs in the game for Mount Ayr.

“Second week in a row that’s (passing game) really done some good things for us,” Showalter said. “Keeping teams from loading up the box quite as much. We’re able to loosen the defense up a little bit.”

Caleb Schnoor recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and led the Raiders with three solo tackles and seven tackle assists. Jed McCreary finished with a quarterback sack.

Showalter said a key to keeping Bedford off the scoreboard for three quarters was limiting the Bulldogs’ powerful rushing attack to one good play at a time, instead of allowing them to string together several good plays.

Mount Ayr improved to 4-2 for the season and 4-0 in Class A District 8, while Bedford dropped to 3-3 and 1-3. The Raiders host Earlham (4-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. With a win in that game, the Raiders will wrap up a home playoff game in the first round.

Nodaway Valley 60, Clarinda Acad. 12

GREENFIELD — Jared Corder scored three touchdowns in three different ways as Nodaway Valley kept its playoff hopes alive with a 60-12 win over Clarinda Academy here Friday.

Corder opened the game with a 10-yard touchdown run and later added a 35-yard punt return for a touchdown. In the second quarter, Corder intercepted a Peyton Morrison pass and returned it for a touchdown.

Senior running back Brennen Weiland added two rushing touchdowns, as did freshman Brady Hilpipre, while Josh Allsup scored one rushing touchdown.

“We executed in all phases,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said. “We had a punt return and interception return for touchdowns and ran for 325 yards on the night. The offensive line executed well and the running backs had big holes to run through.”

Defensively, Nodaway Valley gave up only 75 yards of total offense to the Eagles.

The win improved the Wolverines to 2-4 for the season and 1-3 in Class A District 8 play. Nodaway Valley travels to Martensdale-St. Marys (2-4, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday in another important game for keeping the Wolverines’ playoff hopes alive.

“It was a good team win that was needed after a tough three-game stretch,” Shantz said.

CHARTER OAK — East Union racked up 480 rushing yards here Friday, as the Eagles steamrolled Charter Oak-Ute 68-12 in a non-district matchup.

Mike Ward led the way with 282 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries, while quarterback Ryan Collins had 74 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Matt McGuire added 57 yards and a touchdown on four carries after spelling the varsity players.

“We got Mike out in the open again and, of course, we had a good game with Ryan Collins. He did a nice job of running, too, along with Sanden Cheers and Kole Seales,” East Union co-coach James Hardy said. “We had a three backs that did really well getting in the open.”

Paving the way for the Eagle backs were offensive linemen Brayden Martinez, Tyler Kelley and Kyle Seales, while ends Gabe Nixon and Mason Gossman provided important blocking on the edges.

“We looked at what fronts they were throwing at us and were able to match up and block that,” Hardy said. “That was a big part of it for us Friday night.”

The Eagles were able to hold shifty running back Jay Krier in check for much of the night, giving up just one long run. Krier entered the game averaging 10.0 yards per carry and 143 yards per game.

“Most of the night, we had him bottled up,” Hardy said. “He had a lot of speed.”

East Union improved to 4-2 for the season with the win. The Eagles, currently sitting in third place in Eight-Man District 7 at 1-1, return to district play 7 p.m. Friday when they host Guthrie Center in the Eagles’ homecoming game.

C. Rapids Bayard 63, Murray 6

COON RAPIDS — Quarterback Brandon Riley scored four rushing touchdowns and passed for two more in leading District 7 co-leader Coon Rapids-Bayard over Murray Friday night, 63-6.

The Crusaders improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in district play. The other co-leader, 5-0 Glidden-Ralston, visits Murray on Oct. 16 after a bye this week. Murray stands 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the district after Friday’s loss.

“We had missed opportunities, a few missed passes,” said Murray coach Taylor Fulton. “We should have scored twice early and didn’t. Then we just didn’t seem to have the energy we normally come out with.”

Murray had the ball inside Crusader territory seven times in the game, but scored only on Jack Jones’ 44-yard run with 10:34 left in the game. Coon Rapids-Bayard led 42-0 at halftime.

Riley carried four times for 74 yards and four TDs. Running back Sam Obert carried 10 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Lenz had a 46-yard rushing touchdown.

Riley also completed four passes for 71 yards including two touchdowns.

“Their quarterback is hard to tackle,” Fulton said. “He reads the field really well. They do a good job of spreading the field in running their offense.”

Jones carried 11 times for 71 yards for Murray, which was pressed into more passing situations than usual as the deficit grew. A 15-yard pas to Bryce Keller was the only completion, however.

Joshua Barber and Zane Black each had seven total tackles for the Mustang defense.

Murray’s game against third-ranked Glidden-Ralston will be senior parents night, as the regular-season finale a week later will be at Saydel High School against Grand View Christian.
