Stuart man charged with first-degree arson Monday

STUART — Jason Dearl McGowan, 31, of Stuart was charged with first-degree arson 12:37 p.m. Monday in Stuart.

First-degree arson is a class B felony.

According to a Stuart Police report, McGowan caused a fire in property with the intent to cause damage. The fire resulted in damage to property, and the property was occupied.

While inside the Economy Inn, located at 1216 S. Division St., Stuart, McGowan lit his bed on fire, according to Stuart police officers. A damage estimate is currently unavailable. Menlo and Stuart fire departments, Stuart Police Department and the Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the fire.

No injuries were reported.

McGowan listed an address on North Gaines Street in Stuart; however, he made comments to Adair County jail staff that he was living at the Economy Inn.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Adair County Courthouse, 400 Public Square, in Greenfield.

McGowan is currently being held on no bond.
