Spartan golf

MORAVIA — Southwestern’s golf team competed in the Midwest Collegiate Open Monday and Tuesday, hosted by William Penn University.

Iowa Western won both the men’s and women’s trophies. Alister Balcombe of IWCC ran away with the individual men’s title at 5-under 139 (66-73) at The Preserve at Lake Rathbun.

Southwestern was seventh at 332-346 — 678 (102 over par). Individual leader was Coleton Hoepker in 27th place at 77-83 — 160.

Evy Wells was the lone SWCC entry in the women’s tournament, shooting 98-105 — 203.

“We are a young team getting our feet wet,” said SWCC coach Doug North. “We had stretches of good holes, as a team we had 13 birdies. The Preserve at Lake Rathbun is an always-challenging course that isn’t friendly to errant tee shots.”

The Spartans play Sept. 10 in Mason City, hosted by NIACC, against several Region XI teams.

SWCC (678) — 27. Coleton Hoepker 77-83 — 160; 33. Avery Eliott 80-87 — 167; 37. Christian Groumoutis 82-88 — 170; 38. Jared Baier 93-88 — 181; 39. Connor Giles 93-90 — 183.

SWCC women — 35. Evy Wells 98-105 — 205.
