Central Decatur 46, Nodaway Valley 8

LAMONI — Nodaway Valley struggled from the first play of the game here Friday in a 46-8 loss to Central Decatur at Graceland University.

Central Decatur opened the game by kicking off and recovered a bouncing ball that Nodaway Valley failed to field.

The Cardinals went on to score 46 straight points to open the game, while holding Nodaway Valley to just 88 yards of total offense.

“We struggled on the offensive line early and did get better as the game progressed,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said. “We had matchup problems on the outside with their 6-4 receiver (Peyton Pedersen) and we had fundamental breakdowns on both sides of the ball.”

Pedersen finished with nine catches for 99 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardinals, while sophomore quarterback Carter Boothe threw for 198 yards and four scores.

Nodaway Valley’s lone touchdown came with 6:32 left in the game, as Jared Corder scored on a 40-yard run.

Corder led the Wolverines with 58 rushing yards on three carries.

Defensively, Jackson Lamb had seven solo stops with two assists and two pass breakups. Sam Marnin added six solo tackles and two assists, while Ryan Jensen had four solo stops and two assists. Dylan Cornelison finished with six solo tackles.

Central Decatur amassed 389 yards of total offense.

“We needed to see this to improve for next week and district play,” Shantz said. “We had some of our freshmen step up and have their first taste of varsity football and play well. We are going to need them as they keep improving.”

Nodaway Valley hosts West Central Valley next week.

Albia 36,

Mount Ayr 6

MOUNT AYR — Albia’s running game with Carter Isley proved too much for Mount Ayr to stop here Friday in a battle of state semifinalists from a year ago.

Isley carried the ball 25 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns, as Class 2A top-ranked Albia rolled to a 36-6 victory over Mount Ayr, a semifinalist in Class A last year.

After competing on a level playing field with the Blue Demons in the first half, Albia’s size and depth wore on the Raiders in the second half.

“That was a huge difference in the ballgame,” Mount Ayr co-coach Delwyn Showalter said. “We played with them in the first half and should have been tied. The second half, they started to come at us in waves and pushed us around quite a bit.”

Mount Ayr had a punt return for a touchdown in the first half, but it was called back because of a penalty. Twice, the Raiders had good field position after turnovers, but after moving the ball, the drives stalled out.

Bryce Leshen added 75 yards and one touchdown for Albia, while Blake Bayer connected with Kyle Sinnott for a 51-yard touchdown.

Mount Ayr held Albia to less than 300 yards of total offense, but only accumulated 131 yards of offense itself.

Jacob Taylor ran for 49 yards and Kyle Dolecheck rushed for 48 to lead the Raiderettes. Taylor scored Mount Ayr’s only touchdown on a 5-yard keeper with :19 remaining in the game.

Dolecheck intercepted a pass on defense.

Zach Murphy led Mount Ayr with two solo tackles and seven assisted stops, while Nick Wurster had two solo tackles and six assists, and Rhett Murphy finished with five solo stops and three assists.

Cal Daughton, Logan Stark, Trevor Gooding and Rhett Murphy each finished with one tackle for a loss.

Taylor, Zach Murphy and Jed McCreary each recovered a fumble.

“We played with them in the first half,” Showalter said. “I certainly think that was encouraging. They’re ranked very high in Class 2A. We had to feel good about the way we competed with them the first half. I thought our running game definitely showed some positive signs.”

Mount Ayr returns to action Friday at home against Shenandoah.

Mormon Trail 62, Murray 44

MURRAY — A 14-point lead in the third period faded as Murray fell to 1-1 with a 62-44 loss to a physical Mormon Trail team Friday night.

After a 30-30 halftime deadlock, the Mustangs moved in front 44-30. Mormon Trail then rallied, as some key Murray players were sidelined.

“Some kids cramped up,” said Murray coach Taylor Fulton. “It affected (running backs) Dustin Teals and Jack Jones, and Josh Barber. We’d already lost our middle linebacker, Zane Hatfield, with a dislocated finger in the second quarter. We had some freshmen playing against a physical senior class for Mormon Trail.”

Fulton said the three Mustangs suffering cramps had all taken hydration precautions during the week, but to no avail.

“They are in on everything we do, but they were off the field much of the second half,” Fulton said.

Quarterback Fisher Decker became a playmaker for the Mustangs Friday, partly out of necessity, completing 18 of 29 passes for 267 yards and three interceptions. He connected with Jones on a 42-yard touchdown pass, one for 33 yards with Teas and another for 28 yards with Bryce Keller.

Decker also carried 12 times for 31 net yards, including a 1-yard touchdown. Teas added a 21-yard scoring run while netting 31 yards. Jones had 13 yards on four carries, and returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown.

Jones finished with 115 receiving yards on seven catches. Keller had two receptions for 93 yards. Teas caught seven passes for 37 yards and Tyler McMillen had a pair of catches.

Barber had a busy night defensively, securing 14 solo tackles and six tackle assists with a quarterback sack and two solo stops for losses.

Dylan Callstrom had six solo tackles and six assists, including three tackle assists for losses. Quentin Siefkas finished with six solo stops and four assists.

“Mormon Trail is a big, physical team and penalties really got us,” Fulton said. “We had opportunities where we should have made stops, but a flag would come in late not related to the tackle. Those are hard to overcome. They ran the ball close to 80 times and passed it twice, I think. “

It was a 46-44 game until Murray, running short on time, went for it on fourth down and came up short, leaving Mormon Trail with a short field to add one of two late scores.

“We’ll get a few more guys back with us in the near future, and that will help,” Fulton said. “We already know we’re a better football team than last year. Fisher Decker is learning the offense and was able to make something out of busted plays Friday.”

Wayne of Corydon, a 74-26 winner over Grand View Christian on Friday, hosts the Mustangs this week.

SW Valley 15, Clarinda Acad. 0

CLARINDA — Southwest Valley opened with a 15-0 win over Clarinda Academy on Friday. A report from that game will be published in a future edition of the Creston News Advertiser.
