Murray shuts out Melcher-Dallas, 48-0

MURRAY — Murray used a combination of stout defensive play, along with big plays on offense from Dustin Teas and Jack Jones to cruise to a 48-0 win over Melcher-Dallas here Friday in a season-opening win in week zero.

Murray finished the 2014 season with a 1-8 record, while Melcher-Dallas went 8-3 and made it to the second round of the playoffs.

Friday night looked like the opposite, however.

Murray's defense held Melcher-Dallas to 51 yards of total offense, including just 1 rushing yard.

After the Mustangs' offense sputtered early, Teas found paydirt from 20 yards out with 3:23 to go in the first quarter to get Murray on the scoreboard, 6-0.

That got the ball rolling for the Mustangs and they never looked back.

Teas took the second play of the second quarter 37 yards around the left side for another touchdown, making the score 12-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Jones intercepted a Melcher-Dallas pass and returned it to the 12-yard line. That set up a Jones 8 yard touchdown run two plays later. After a 2-point conversion, Murray led 20-0 with 5:40 left in the first half.

Murray forced a three-and-out and appeared to score on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Fisher Decker to Jones, but the play was called back for a holding penalty. After Decker was sacked, Jones took an option pitch around the right side, broke a tackle, tiptoed the sideline and went 77 yards for a touchdown with 1:58 left in the half for a 28-0 lead.

Teas took the first play of the second half 43 yards for a touchdown to make the score 36-0, putting the running clock into effect. Jones then added a 46-yard touchdown run to make it 42-0.

Murray put the finishing touches on the 48-0 win with 9:44 left in the game, when Decker connected with Hunter Paschke for an 8-yard touchdown.

Jones finished the game with 152 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Teas added 93 yards on seven carries. Jones also intercepted two passes on defense and finished with 6.5 total tackles.

Josh Barber led the Mustangs with eight solo tackles and seven assisted tackles. Kris Davis added four solo tackles and two assisted tackles.

Murray hosts Mormon Trail next Friday.
