Today is Aug. 27, the 239th day of the year. There are 126 days left in 2015. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (Aug. 24-30) in history.

The Creston/O-M football coaching staff for 2010 includes new head coach Brian Morrison, assistants Steve Tussey, Chad Needham, Darrell Frain, Kevin Cooper, Chad Briley and Monte Neitzel and freshman coaches Steve Birchard and Shawn Miller. Morrison was an eight-year assistant for Dick Bergstrom, an Iowa Hall of Fame coach who stepped down after 33 years guiding the Panthers. Bergstrom finished with a coaching record of 204-156.

The Clearfield Lions’ rescheduled Fourth of July celebration was held Aug. 30. The event started with a volleyball tournament in the city park and a baby contest followed by kids games. The previously rained-out Fourth of July parade began in the evening, followed by musical entertainment and fireworks. The Fourth of July drawing was to follow the fireworks.

MISSISSIPPI—Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast on Aug 29. The storm howled ashore with winds of 145 mph and engulfed thousands of homes. First estimates of the death toll by the governor in one Mississippi county alone was as high as 80 and likely to rise. Downed power lines and trees, flooding and chunks of broken concrete prevented rescuers from reaching victims.

Ron and Dottie Dunphy hosted a field day on their farm near Creston. Local producers had an opportunity to hear research on soybeans grown for human consumption—a tofu variety and organic low-linolenic fatty-acid varieties. The Dunphys had participated in planting research plots for 29 years and also had been holding field days to share results and new ideas with their neighbors.

Creston High School hosted its annual kickoff for fall sports teams. High school students featured on the sports page were Kaylee Harris for volleyball; Dillon Roberts, Alex Johnson and Austin Studer for cross country, and Greg Irr, Eric Bradley and Maclaine Sorden for football. Former NFL star Marv Cook was the featured speaker for parents activity night.

A new preschool for East Union School District was to open in the fall. The district received a $44,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education. The process for hiring a teacher was in place, and there would be enough funds for an enrollment of 12 children. The preschool would be located at the commercial building at the Union County fairgrounds.

Corning police officer Mark Pote and Adams County Deputy Joe Wilson made a big bust of 271 grams of marijuana and two kits used for injecting drugs. A van was stopped at 2:55 a.m. Aug. 25 after running a stop sign at the intersection of highways 34 and 148. Three out-of-town people were arrested, with the driver charged with operating while intoxicated and all three charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver and having no tax stamp on the drugs. Street value was $1,200. At that time, it was one of the largest confiscations in Adams County.
