DPS at the Iowa State Fair—safety begins with knowledge

DES MOINES—The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) invites state fairgoers to visit the DPS booth in the Hall of Law under the Grandstand from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily. This year, the DPS will focus on “safety begins with knowledge.”

The DPS booth will feature a mock crime scene with informational posters explaining how the department and its divisions work together with local, state and federal agencies to solve major crimes in our state.

Also included within the DPS booth are: Office of the Commissioner, Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB), Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement (DNE), Iowa Division of Intelligence & Fusion Center, State Fire Marshal Division (SFM), Iowa State Patrol, Professional Development Bureau and special guests: Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

Highlights at the DPS booth during the fair include, free sex offender registry searches through the DCI, severe weather awareness while at the fair from the SFM, live K-9 demonstrations from the SFM K-9s, the 80th anniversary of the Iowa State Patrol, take a spin on the wheel of knowledge with GTSB, learn how to become a DPS employee, learn of the latest drug trends across the state from DNE and DPS freebies from the Office of the Commissioner.

DPS will be doing a daily “find the DPS employee of the day” social media posting for fairgoers to log on to the DPS Facebook and Twitter sites and take a guess. One random correct guess will be chosen daily for a free prize.

DPS hopes you will join them at the Iowa State Fair, “Nothing Compares,” Aug. 13-23.
