DAR

The Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meeting was held July 11 at Summit House, Creston. Marj Kinkade was hostess, as Carol Baudler, Karla Caltrider and Ethel Handley weren’t present.

The program was given by Lynne Schlaht on business and commerce in the Revolutionary War. She listed all of the professions of the time and talked about how the women carried on when the men went to war.

Acting Regent Jane Briley called the meeting to order. Rhonda Oliphant read the president general’s message. Connie Kinkade gave the three minute defense report about who ran the country after the Revolutionary War until President Washington was elected. All members recited the DAR rituals.

Eight members answered roll call by telling their patriot’s occupation or business. The minutes of last meeting were read by Briley and approved with the following corrections: the meeting was held at the Salem Lutheran Church in Creston and Jan Morgan is from Greenfield. Treasurer Bonnie Riepe gave the treasurer’s report. There were no bills.

Rosalie O’Grady gave the conservation moment stating to not run the water while you are lathering you hands. Rhonda Oliphant gave the Indian moment about tribal land disagreement over the Gulf of Mexico. Lynne Schlaht gave the Constitution moment saying the U.S. Constitution was the oldest and shortest constitution. The commemorative events, given by Connie Kinkade, was that July 11, 1804, Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

The flag moment was a discussion about the Confederate flag being taken down this week at a state capitol. Jane Briley led a discussion on women’s issues. Connie Kinkade gave a Vietnam minute telling the United States Congress held a ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War on July 9.

Marjorie Kinkade gave the sunshine moment. She sent five birthday cards, two get well cards and a thinking of you card. It was noted that Hazel Braby had fallen and Judith Wachter is to have surgery on July 21.

Marjorie Kinkade also gave the chapter history. During the mid 1930s, Regent Katherine Arnold and Historian Grace Harsh copied marriage records in the Union County Courthouse dating back to 1894 and sent them to Washington, D.C. to be placed in the DAR Library.

For old business, members were reminded to enter their Celebrate America hours. Each person told what they had done to celebrate the Fourth of July. All members had participated with some activities including flying the flag, parades, family gatherings, programs, and fireworks.

New business was that the Continental Congress review was postponed until August. Briley told about the important updates regarding dues invoicing.

Board of Management was held Aug. 2 to 3. Jane, Connie, and Marj planned to attend.

Next year state conference will be May 5 to 7 in Ames. The president general will be in attendance.

It was announced that the state preservation chairman was asking each member to send a picture and story about an object that is part of your personal history.

Summit House has asked that we park on the east side of the building for our meetings.

An executive board meeting was held July 18 at Marj Kinkade’s to work on the yearbook for next year.

The meeting was adjourned. Chaplain Connie Kinkade gave the closing prayer.

After the meeting, the members played DARnopoly. Lynne Schlaht won the game at the state DAR conference.

The next meeting will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mount Ayr Extension Office. The program will be the New York City Freedom Tour by Jolene Richardson. Roll call will be “have you taken a historical tour.” Hostesses will be Dorothy Hughes, Darlene Morgan and Jan Morgan.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership. If you are interested contact Registrar Marjorie Kinkade at mkinkade@mediacombb.net or 641-782-2503.
