Mormon Trail 2

MILO — Murray opened Class 1A Region 6 play here Tuesday with a 10-2 win over Mormon Trail.

The Lady Mustangs had four eighth-graders in the lineup, as starting shortstop McKenzie McIntosh missed the game with a back injury.

“It was a good opening regional game for us,” head coach Danny Jensen said. “We gave up just two hits. We had two errors that led to both runs. We know it is one game at a time. ‘Survive and advance’ is our motto.”

Kayla Wookey pitched the first five innings of the game, earning the win with one hit allowed and seven strikeouts compared to three walks. Breianna Klein pitched two innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Madison Gonseth finished with two doubles and three RBI in the game, while Kelli Romero had two hits and one RBI. Klein, Deena Snyder and Brandi Gilbert all recorded two hits apiece with one RBI.

Murray plays Southeast Warren tonight in Milo, with the winner advancing to Friday’s Class 1A Region 6 semifinal in Corydon.

SW Valley 12, Audubon 2

CORNING — Southwest Valley rolled to a 12-2 win here Tuesday against Audubon in the Class 2A Region 8 opener.

The Timberwolves took advantage of nine Wheelerette walks and three hit batters, all of which led to seven runs.

Kim Hults led the offensive attack, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and three RBI.

Danica Sunderman, Lexi Bronner, Allie Bronner and Janelle Gibler each drove in one run.

Kylie McBride picked up the win for the Timberwolves, pitching all five innings and giving up no earned runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Southwest Valley advances to tonight’s Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal in Greenfield against Nodaway Valley.

The winner of that game advances to Friday’s regional semifinal in Irwin.
