Panther freshmen sweep Clarinda

The Creston freshman softball team picked up a pair of wins here Thursday against Clarinda, winning 11-5 and then 10-9 in the second game.

Taylor Buxton picked up the win in the opener, giving up five runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Kalan Bloodgood, Taylor McDonald and Mary Ott all went 2-for-3 at the plate. Brielle Baker, Saige Rice and Buxton each recorded a hit in the win.

The Panthers held on for a 10-9 win in the second game, as Buxton came on in relief to earn the save. Buxton gave up three runs and had two strikeouts. Baker picked up the win, giving up six runs and striking out three.

Rice finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple. Baker was 2-2 with a double, while Grace Root finished 2-3. Cassity Conley and Devon Buls each recorded a hit.

“It was good to see the girls fight and battle at the plate,” Creston freshman coach Carla Smith said. “Saige had a great game at the plate, hitting right-handed and left-handed. Marika Chubick had key walks that got us going in multiple innings. Taylor Buxton did a great job of coming in and shutting them down on the mound.”
