Fireworks on and off the track

CORNING — Independence Day at Adams County Speedway brought fireworks during the races and afterward, as McCunn Specialty Firearms presented the fireworks display that followed the exciting racing on the track here Saturday.

Garner wins amidst controversy

It appeared as if Saturday’s Stalker Chevrolet B-Modified Feature was going to belong to Marshalltown’s Jenae Gustin. That, however, was not be the case.

Gustin started on the pole position and held that spot for the entire race, pulling away in dominating fashion. While Gustin pulled away, Craig Garner and David Schwartz battled fiercely on the track for second place, before a late race caution brought the field back together.

The yellow flag was no problem for Gustin, as she easily built her lead back up and pulled away from the field, taking the checkered flag ahead of Garner and Schwartz.

Gustin, however, failed post-race tech inspection due to her engine compression being above regulation, as well as an unapproved scented lubricant in her fuel tank.

Controversy ensued as Gustin was stripped of her victory and disqualified from the race, making Garner the victor, his second win of the season. Amidst all of the controversy, David Schwartz came home second, Jerod Weston third, Kody Havens fourth and Blain Petersen fifth.

Miller holds off Zadina

The 2014 Northland Oil Pro-stock Championship battle came down to Greg Miller and Joe Zadina, with Miller holding off Zadina. Saturday night’s feature race was no different.

James Carroll and Glen Hoyt led the field to the green flag. Hoyt took the lead and held it for a couple of laps before Miller overpowered Hoyt for the lead.

Joe Zadina charged through the pack, trying to catch Miller in the waning laps, but ran out of laps to do so, allowing Miller to get his second win of the 2015 season and chipping into the points battle occurring between Kevin Sharp and Brad Derry, who finished third and fourth, respectively, followed by Glen Hoyt in fifth.

Glendenning dominates

Paul Glendenning dominated the Coors Light Silver Bullet Late Model feature to pick up his second win of the 2015 season.

Glendenning started in fourth position and took the lead early in the race and never looked back, as the race went clean and green.

Glendenning crossed the finish line with a whole straightaway lead over second place finisher Sterling Perkins. John Hampel finished third, Colton Leal got a career-best fourth place just in front of father Mike Leal in fifth.

Wiggins wins

Jeff Wiggins said before Saturday night’s Poet Biorefining Modified feature that he thought he had something for Jesse Dennis.

He was right.

Wiggins started inside the second row and wasted no time taking the lead on lap one.

John Davis also worked his way through the field, as would defending track champion and current points leader Jesse Dennis.

Wiggins and Davis distanced themselves from the pack and engaged in an intriguing battle for the lead. That battle, however, would open the door up for Dennis to contend for the win.

The final laps of racing consisted of each driver trying to find the right way to propel themselves into victory lane. Davis made a couple of attempts to pass Wiggins, but was unsuccessful. Dennis ran out of laps as Wiggins a.k.a “The Candy Man” picked up his second win of the season. Davis finished in the runner-up spot followed by Dennis in third, Brian Foote in fourth and Clint Homan in fifth.

McAtee gets first win

It’s not every week a Ford Fastback ends up in the Miller Lite Victory Lane at Adams County Speedway, but it will happen often if Matt McAtee has anything to say about it.

McAtee finally captured his elusive first win of the 2015 season in dominating fashion.

McAtee wasted no time working his way to the lead, putting a cushion between him and the rest of the field. McAtee took the white flag and was a half lap away from completing the race when a yellow prompted the first green, white, checkered.

McAtee hit his marks on the restart, but another caution prolonged the race. On the final restart, McAtee held off Tom Myers and a hard-charging Jeremy Auten to capture his first win of the 2015 season, throwing himself right back into the thick of the Chat Mobility Hobby Stock championship chase. Myers finished in second, followed by Auten in third, David Weeda in fourth and Andy Davison in fifth.
