Support Special Olympics

From Randall Romesburg, Special Olympics coach

Creston

On Sunday, June 14, 2015, the Creston Elementary/Middle School/High School Special Olympics athletes were honored with an awards banquet held at the congregate meal site. Special guests were Frank and Judy Gale.

The athletes invited school administrators and board members to showcase their accomplishments for the past year. Thank you to the one school board member for responding to the RSVP that she had a previous engagement and could not attend. That was the only response received.

Our athletes work hard at being the best they can be. They make the effort to be at practices and be good citizens both at school and in the community. We have had to raise funds to attend bowling competitions, basketball skills competitions and track and field competitions. Even though money is given from the Booster Club for Special Olympics, we have not been allowed to use it. Money given by private donations to the school for Special Olympics is not available.

Costs have gone up this past year for our competitions. We spend over $2,000 for fees, meals and housing. We also buy trophies for our athletes because they are all winners. The school district does allow us to use school vehicles for transportation to and from competitions. We have a can trailer set up at True Value for donations to help support our needs. We have also received donations from civic groups that we directly deposit into our group account through Special Olympics in Grimes.

Our athletes, their parents, guardians, families thank the community for their support in our accomplishments. Maybe when it is time to re-elect board members, we need to take a look at what is most important to them.
