Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met June 17.

Canasta winners were Janet Kessler, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Linda Clark, third.

Sandeman won the door prize.

Wanda Nash was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.

LG P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met June 16 at the home of Nancy James with Terry Ammon serving as co-hostess. Nine members responded to roll call.

A thank you letter was received from Ericka Abell for the $500 scholarship she received. The club also received a star symbolizing support to the Iowa Cottey College Scholarship Fund.

President Marcia Riley gave her report on the Iowa State P.E.O. convention she attended in Des Moines. She described the reports that were given from some of the recipients of money and scholarships from P.E.O. project funds. The theme of the convention was “Nurturing Renaissance Women.”

Chapter members plan to carpool to Winterset July 14 to have a social outing to have lunch in Winterset and tour the John Wayne Historic House. P.E.O. Chapter AZ members have been invited.

Crest Area Theatre

The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of Crest Area Theatre was held June 1. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. with six board members present.

CAT’s next production will be “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” July 10-12. Jerry Huffman and Liam Ray are directing.

There will be no board meeting in July due to rehearsals for the play.

Crest Area Theatre seeks to provide an opportunity for creative activity and entertainment in the theatre and to serve the community by combining the talents of local artists for dramatic, cultural and artistic developments. United Methodist Women

The Executive Committee of Creston United Methodist Women met 9 a.m. May 7 in fellowship hall. Co-President Sandy McNichols presided and called the meeting to order by all reciting the UMW Pledge. Joys and concerns were discussed. For devotions, Psalm 19 was read and closed with a prayer. Correspondence was read from the Afton Assembly of God Church and from Women at the Well.

Minutes of the April meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given, and it was approved.

Vice President Ann Driskell suggested the women do a Latin America mission study in January.

For Social Action, a flyer titled “Charter for Racial Justice” was handed out. From the Food Bank of Iowa there was a report about how 1 in 5 children go hungry in Iowa and maybe UMW should get involved in the backpack program.

There was a fundraising proposal presented that will be acted upon in the fall.

Five women went to Bidwell Riverside for a work day May 27, and six women attended the prison ministries worship service June 4 at Mitchellville Women’s Correctional Facility.

The next Executive meeting will be Aug. 27, and the next Unit meeting will be Sept. 3.

The Unit meeting followed the Executive at 10 a.m.

Roll call was answered by nine members of Morning Circle and eight members of Evening Circle. There were three guests.

Following the business meeting, Mary Morris presented the mission study on “The Church and People with Disabilities.” We need to be sensitive to those with disabilities, listen to them and support them. She showed a video titled “A Place for All” in the faith community.

Morning Circle met 9:30 a.m. May 21 in fellowship hall with eight members present. Alma Hoepker was hostess and Judy Kading presided and gave the program “Welcoming our Diversity.”

Evening Circle met 7 p.m. May 21 in fellowship hall with seven members present. Rosalie Denton presided and Terry Ammon gave the same program as Morning Circle.

The Young Women did not meet in May.

P.E.O. Chapter AZ

The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held June 16 at Salem Lutheran
Church. Fifteen members were present.

Chapter LG invited Chapter AZ to a social in Winterset July 14 to tour the John Wayne museum. Chapter AZ was invited to attend a special tea for incoming P.E.O. president of Maryland, Diane Fisher Fox, previously from Creston and former member of Chapter AZ.

President Sharon Bennett presented Nancy Loudon’s report of the state convention.

Refreshments were served by hostess Shirley Ide and co-hostess Carolyn Dillenburg.

The next meeting will be Sept. 15.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Monday at Gibson Memorial Library in Creston with 10 members present. Jane Briley presided. Kathy Parmenter reported that some Union County history is now available in disc form and is for sale. The Society website will be updated by listing all Society books that are for sale.

Members were reminded of the need for genealogical exhibits at county fair. The president also requested volunteers to work at that event.

Diane Ide, assisted by friends, presented the program on planning a family reunion. She shared suggestions to make a family reunion fun for all ages, using photos,, trivia, recognition’s and stories. Cinda Long, Karen Seley and Pat Cain assisted Ide, playing roles of her ancestors, and relating family stories of their era. All were dressed in fashions of the time period.

The July 27 meeting at 6 p.m. at the library will focus on genealogical records of the Revolutionary War period.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 22 members and one guest. President Jane Lowe presided, and Jim Morris did the prayer. Lori Harvey was the finemaster.

The program was Randall Romesburg with Special Olympics in Creston. He works with elementary to high school students. The kids compete in bowling, basketball, track and field. The Creston Kiwanis Club presented Romesburg with a $300 check for Creston Special Olympics.
