LENOX — Untimely errors in the top of the seventh inning allowed I-35 to pull away from Lenox Wednesday in the Tiger’s season opener, 11-2.

The Tigers trailed 3-1 going into the final inning, carried by a strong performance from Beth Christensen in the circle. She fanned seven batters in the outing.

“The score does not represent the intensity of the game,” Lenox head coach Tom Shields said. “We’ll have beenter at bats as we progress.”

Katie Dukes and Megan Brown drove in the Tiger’s two runs. I-35’s pitcher Carlyn Stanley had 15 strikeouts in the win.

Albia 12,

Murray 11

ALBIA — The Murray Lady Mustangs ended up on the wrong side of an offense battle against Albia Wednesday in their season opener, 12-11.

The Lady Mustangs picked up four runs in the top of the first, but Albia answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Murray could not recover from the Blue Demon’s six-run performance in the fourth inning.

“It was a good night for hitting,” Jerry Shields said. “Our young pitchers struggled and that is to be expected early in the year. It was good compeition for us stepping up to 3A.”

Brandi Gilbert had three hits, two RBIs and a triple for the Lady Mustangs. Kayla Wookey drove in four RBIs with two hits.

Melcher-Dallas 13,

MELCHER-DALLAS — Melcher-Dallas threw three innings of no-hit softball in a 13-0 victory over the Bulldogs Wednesday.

“I believe inexperience at a lot of positions and maybe some first game nerves played a part in the game’s outcome,” said Bulldog head coach Mike Cooley.

Behlee Ott was the lone runner to reach base for O-M, drawing a walk in the first inning.

Nodaway Valley 10,

Stanton 7

STANTON — After trailing 6-2, Nodaway Valley picked up eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a 10-7 victory over Stanton here Wednesday.

Stanton built their lead with a strong fourth inning, bring in four runs.

Paige McElfish earned the victory for the Wolverines. She struck out 12, drove in two runs and had a triple. Jessica Nelson also had a big night at the plate going 2-4 with a double.
