Shields secures return trip to state golf

ANITA — Sophomore Tessa Shields’ score of 94 helped her advance to her second state golf tournament Friday at the Class 1A girls district meet at Crestwood Hills.

“It was a very rainy, wet and cool regional final golf tournament,” Mount Ayr Raiderette coach Scott Giles said. “We had a very young team this year and I’m proud of the work these girls did and they way they went out and competed this season and in today’s tournament.”

Shields posted a 48 on the front nine and improved to a 46 on the final nine holes en route to her fourth place finish of 94. Second through fifth place was separated by only five strokes.

Mount Ayr’s Abbey Schafer carded a 104 for Mount Ayr and teammates Cheyenne Hoveman and Hallie Still scored 123 and 132 respectively. The Raiderettes finished fifth as a team.

Pleasantville ran away with the regional team title, earning the top three individual spots with a combined score of 373. River Valley was second with a score of 401.
