Season openers rained out

CORNING — Season openers for Creston and Southwest Valley softball and baseball teams were rained out here Monday night.

Conner Pals led off the baseball game with a single for the Panthers and the game was called because of rain and lightning as second batter Brenden McDowell was at bat.

In softball, the game was called in the top of the third inning with Creston ahead 5-0. Haylee LaMasters and Natalie Mostek each had RBI hits in the first inning, and Taylor Briley drove in a run in the second inning.

Southwest Valley won the JV baseball game, 8-6, mostly on bases on balls as Cody McMann had the only Timberwolves’ hit. Chance Cobb was the winning pitcher. Deavan Reese had a triple and two RBI for Creston. Reese, Cory Marquardt and Kylan Smallwood all pitched for Creston.

Panther coach Steve Birchard said it is unlikely the varsity game will be made up.

In softball, the game was called in the top of the third inning with Creston ahead 5-0. Haylee LaMasters and Natalie Mostek each had RBI hits in the first inning, and Taylor Briley drove in a run in the second inning.

LaMasters had struck out all six batters she faced. The Creston JV won 20-1. Taylor Briley pitched two innings and Cali Foglesong pitched one.

Chloe Hagle was 4-of-4 with two doubles and three RBI for the Panther JV that had 17 total hits. Morghan Frey drove in four runs and Foglesong had three RBI.
