Watson resigns as Creston boys basketball coach

For the second time in as many years, Creston athletic director Jeff Bevins will have to conduct a search for a new head boys basketball coach.

Creston head coach Brett Watson turned in his resignation at Monday’s school board meeting, leaving the position vacant after leading the Panthers to a 15-7 record in his first and only season at the helm.

Watson, whose family still lives in the metro area, said the decision to resign as Creston head coach was family-driven.

“My son is up there and it’s primarily a family decision,” he said.

Watson has accepted a high school math teaching position and the head girls basketball coaching position at Van Meter High School. He said he may also possibly get back into coaching some football with the move.

Watson said he’ll look back fondly on his time at Creston High School.

“I’d say bottom line is the lifelong relationships I was able to build, the kids I was able to meet, the support of the community we had,” he said. “Just the hard work the kids put in. It shows the parental support they’ve had. It’s very special and it’s a very difficult decision to leave, but I think it’s what’s best for my family right now.”
