Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met May 6.

Canasta winners were Joan Chubick, first; Mary Kline, second; and Marilyn Larimore, third.

Gwen Sandeman won the door prize.

Maxine May was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday, May 13.

Ladies Literary Circle

Ladies Literary Circle of Creston held its annual spring luncheon May 8 at Crestmoor Golf Club.

The traditional chicken salad was served along with fruit, roll, ice cream and sugar wafers.

Linda Hartsock, president, conducted a short business meeting. Roll call was followed by the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting. A treasurer’s report was given by Dyan Huffman. Stephani Finley from next year’s program committee initiated a discussion about the date for the 2016 annual spring luncheon, and it was decided to hold the event on April 29, 2016.

Vanita Moberg was introduced as the discussion facilitator of the book by Robin Olivaira, “My Name is Mary Sutter,” the All Iowa Reads Book for 2015. Attendees were first asked to evaluate the book on a scale of one to 10. The main characters of the story were discussed in terms of their wholeness and development and their contribution to the story. It was an historical novel and interesting facts of the Civil War and that time period contributed to the character development.

The next meeting of Creston Ladies Literary Circle will be in September.

Chapter LG P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met May 5 at the Homestead Assisted Living activity room with Linda Linch and Nancy James serving as hostesses. Sixteen members responded to roll call and had lunch prior to the meeting.

Marcia Riley, president, installed Sandy Harris as treasurer. Susan Weight and Judy Weese were initiated as new members.

Chapter FW in Lenox invited LG to their picnic June 11 where the state convention report will be read. If you can attend, notify Riley for more information.

There was an announcement that Dianne Fisher Fox will be installed as president at the 57th Maryland State P.E.O. Convention. She is the daughter of the late Wes and Mary Fisher of Creston.

Kay Ritter reported on the trunk sale LG participated in with Chapter AZ May 2. After some discussion, Peg Anderson made the motion to give LG’s share of the proceeds from the trunk sale to Chapter AZ for P.E.O. projects or scholarships as they may choose. This was seconded by Annette Rice and followed by a favorable voice vote.

The recipients of the $500 scholarships to be awarded to Creston seniors from the P.E.O. this year are as follows: Ericka Abell, Bryanna Dagett, Nicole Haley, Natalie Mostek, Maria Mostek, Monica Powers and Joy Wolfe.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 26 members and three guests. President Jane Lowe presided, Ken Norton did the prayer, and Terry Freeman was the finemaster.

The program was Devon Leith with Tyler Insurance who discussed the response for the need to have more people CPR and AED certified to help save lives. The first offering of classes were well attended and fundraising response for more AEDs in public places and businesses have really filled a need. Greater Regional Healthcare foundation is still accepting more donations for more units that are needed. SWCC offers the classes every month for CPR for a small charge.

The Kiwanis Club is taking donations for the next three weeks at the weekly meeting for the United Church of Christ Congregational Church Food Pantry that serves needy families in the area.

TOPS 1338

TOPS Iowa 1338 Creston continues to meet at the Methodist Church at the corner of Howard and Elm Streets. Weigh-in is from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

For February, the best losers were Shellie Sullivan and Mitzi Cellan. March’s best losers were Diana Loomis and Anna Thompson. Cellan was April’s best loser and Monica B. second.

On May 4, 11 members weighed in with a net loss for the week.

Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report and Loomis gave the secretary’s report.

The best losers for the week were Neoma Davis and Carol Sheldahl.

Squares was won by Davis. The fines from April 27 went to Sandy Oswald.

The Red Can Challenge was to eat a balanced breakfast daily.

Cellan presented a program on iron and iron deficiency, symptoms and treatment.

On Monday, the best losers were first Monica B. and Cellan second.

The minutes were read and the treasurer’s report was given.

The fines from the previous week went to Davis as did Squares.

The Red Can Challenge was to eat fruit and vegetables as snacks.

Area coordinator Barbara Bratton was present and gave a Power Point program “Making Your Plate Great.”

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.

Bancroft History Assembly

Bancroft History Assembly met May 4 at the home of Kay Ritter for brunch. Ten members and one life member were in attendance.

JoAnn Nurnberg, president, called the meeting to order. The theme for the day was “Nature takes pleasure in creating the impossible.” The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The inspirational thought was read.

Roll call was answered by telling what summer plans are or tell of a memorable trip taken. Minutes from the April meeting were read by Sandy Oswald and approved. Avis Hainline presented the treasurer’s report. Report was approved.

There were no committee reports or correspondence. There was no old business. There was no federated news.

New business: Beth resigned as historian. Ruth nominated Marisue. Kay seconded the recommendation. Marisue accepted the nomination. Nomination was accepted by Marisue and approved by all members. A thank you is to be sent to Kay. Leone is to be changed to a life member. October will be a social day.

Installation of officers was done by Peg. The new treasurer is to be Joan Chubick.

The club collect was recited. Kay moved meeting be adjourned. Mary seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned.
