NV wins third straight POI golf title

INDIANOLA — The Nodaway Valley boys golf team continued its string of dominance within the Pride of Iowa Conference here at Deer Run Golf Club Tuesday, winning its third straight conference title.

The Wolverines posted a team score of 327, finishing 16 strokes ahead of runner-up Central Decatur.

Nodaway Valley placed all four scoring members of its team in the top six individually, rolling to the team title.

“We played smart today,” head coach Steve Shantz said. “We played the course as it should be played and did not try to make shots that would lead us into big trouble. This was one of our big goals of the year. We do not have the depth of previous years and the golfers responded.”

Central Decatur senior Noah Simon won top medalist honors by defeating Nodaway Valley junior Wes Davis in a three-hole playoff after both golfers carded rounds of 78.

Jackson Lamb finished third individually for the Wolverines with a round of 82. Placing fourth was Sam Marnin, who shot an 83. Colton Garside rounded out the team scoring for Nodaway Valley with his sixth-place finish after a round of 84.

“Having four out of the top six is quite an accomplishment for our team,” Shantz said. “We have the ability and all four golfers really grinded it out on the 8.5-mile hilly course. Our lifting workouts really helped us out in keeping our strength throughout the day.”

Davis trailed Simon by one stroke after the first playoff hole, as Simon birdied and Davis recorded a par.

An errant chip shot on the second playoff hole put Davis down two more strokes with a double bogey, as Simon sank a par putt from about 15 feet. Davis got one stroke back on the final playoff hole with a par.

East Union finished third in the team standings with a score of 368, while Southwest Valley was fourth with a 380 and Lenox fifth with a 384. Mount Ayr was ninth with a score of 426.

East Union senior Cole Campbell finished ninth with his round of 86. Lenox senior Caleb Lange and Mount Ayr senior Connor Giles finished in a four-way tie for 10th, as they each shot rounds of 88.
