Panther girls second at Atlantic Co-ed

ATLANTIC — The Creston girls track team battled the conditions here Monday at the Atlantic Co-ed Meet and finished second to Harlan with 77 points.

The Cyclones won the meet with 120 points. The Panthers held off Glenwood’s 69 points, with Shenandoah finishing fourth with 66 points.

The Panthers got a good start to the meet from the field events, where Hannah Hood and Natalie Mostek each set new personal bests.

Mostek won the high jump competition with a new PR clearance of 4-11.

“Natalie, in her second to last high jump competition of her career, jumped a PR,” head coach Clay Arnold said. “She was the only girl to clear 4-10, which was real nice. She’s tried 5-0 about 60 times in her career and just barely misses it all the time. She got over 4-10 easy, so moved her up an inch and cleared that.”

Hood, meanwhile, broke her own school record in the shot put for the third straight meet. This time, she improved by more than a foot with her throw of 40-9.50 for second place.

“Hannah decided the conditions weren’t very nice and she was just going to go ahead and throw a 13-inch PR,” Arnold said. “Absolutely incredible. Another new school record.”

Her older sister Marie Hood finished eighth in the event with a season’s best throw of 31-8.50.

Shortly after winning the high jump competition, Mostek came back and anchored the 4x800 relay team to victory in 10:14.32.

The Panthers trailed Harlan by a large margin for much of the race before Taylor Briley cut into the Cyclones’ lead in the third leg. Mostek anchored in a season’s best split of 2:23.66.

“We needed everything she had to anchor that 4x8,” Arnold said. “From the gun, we were way behind. Harlan was way out in front. I quit counting how far ahead Harlan was on exchanges. Briley cut it down some. we were a full 10 seconds behind Harlan.”

Also running on the 4x800 relay were Jessica Beatty and Lexie Little.

The 4x400 relay relay team of Breanna Wallace, Raegen Smith, Mostek and Briley won with a time of 4:15.51.

Wallace ran a season’s best split of 1:03.31 and Mostek ran a season’s best split of 1:03.48.

Smith anchored the Panthers to a second-place finish in the sprint medley relay. With Harlan running out in front, Smith held off Shenandoah’s Serena Parker in a close finish at the line.

“Shenandoah tried to run us down and Raegen just edged out Parker, just outleaned is all, barely,” Arnold said. “Right at the wire for second place.”

Wallace ran 1:05.33 for fifth place in the 400 meter dash, while Danielle Castillo scored a point for the Panthers in the 100 meter hurdles with her sixth-place finish.

Senior Maria Mostek finished second in the 800 meters and took fourth in the 1,500 meters.

“Not as many highlights tonight. We were a little flat,” Arnold said. “Field events were a huge highlight for us. Natalie was awesome all the way around. Amber (Castillo) was good. I thought Amber, Nat and Hannah were the standouts of the night.”

With the logjam of Hawkeye 10 Conference teams at the top of the team standings Monday, Arnold said Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet in Glenwood is shaping up to be an exciting one.

“Hopefully we’re a little sharper and have better handoffs,” he said. “We’re going to have to. Honestly, it’s shaping up to be one of the best and most talented Hawkeye 10s we’ve been to. Might be one of the best years.”
