Kucera takes second in Trojan Tournament singles

The Creston/O-M boys tennis team had a busy weekend, falling 6-3 Friday at Osceola Clarke before taking seventh place at the Trojan Invitational in Atlantic.

Freshmen Jacob Cook and Jaden Driskell picked up singles victories for the Panthers against Clarke, and teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

“It was a tough day for us,” coach Kevin Cooper said. “We were just so inconsistent and had too many unforced errors. The credit goes to Clarke for getting the win.”

Creston/O-M scored 12 points to finish ahead of Kuemper’s 11 at the Atlantic tourney Saturday. Knoxville was team champion with Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln taking second.

One of the highlights for the Panthers was junior Ryan Kucera finishing second at No. 1 singles.

“Ryan had a great day and played very solid tennis,” Cooper said. “He got a great draw, and was able to take advantage of that by playing very consistently.”

Cook and Driskell went 1-2 for the day in placing sixth at No. 2 doubles. They went three sets in a first-round loss and won their first consolation round match.

“Jacob and Jaden had a great day,” Cooper said. “They came up just short in the first round against a team from Council Bluffs AL who was a very talented team. They play very well together as a team, and will only get better with experience.”

Sam Eagan in No. 2 singles and the team of Triston Davidson and Seth Maitlen in No. 1 doubles each placed eighth.

“Sam was very competitive and has come a long way since the start of the season,” Cooper said. “He ended up playing very solid in round one against the second-place finisher in his bracket.

“Triston and Seth had a very close first-round match that could have gone either way,” Cooper added. “They are playing together for the first time this year and hopefully can continue to improve.”

Creston boys and girls teams were in action against Red Oak Monday. Results will be published in Wednesday’s News Advertiser.
